Looking For a Bcp That Wont Cause Breakthrough Bleeding Posted: 07-21-05 23:56pm
I have tried ortho tricyclen, orthocyclen,
ortho novum, and ovcon35...I am very
adament about taking my pills on time. I
would be only fifteen minutes late in
taking them at the most. The spotting is
the only complaint I have about
orthocyclen (which is what I am on now).
Everything else is great. I have heard
that yasmin works well for spotting, but
there are other side effects with that one
that I dont have now. Can anyone please
give me some advice on this topic? I have
faith that with all the choices of oral
bcp's, I should be able to find one that
is best for me.

The general rule is the more estrogen, the
less break through bleeding. However,
you've already tried 35mcg pills which,
while still "low-dose", have more estrogen
than other "low-dose" pills like alesse or
mircette (20 mcg). I would imagine a
pill with 50mcg of estrogen would help
(such as demulen or ovcon), but this is a
pretty large amount of estrogen and can
cause lots of other estrogen-related
side-effects (like bloating, headaches,
breast tenderness, etc.). Yasmin (30
mcg), while still having 5mcg less of
estrogen then what you've tried, is
"supposedly" better for controlling
break-through bleeding. Although I don't
really understand why, I think I would
personally try yasmin first before uping
the estrogen to 50mcg. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the feedback! It
really helps. I still have one more pack
of the ortho cyclen. If I still have
spotting problems with this last pack, I
will ask my doctor about yasmin.
