Dealing With Weight Problems...can Anyone Offer Any Advice?

Wow, it's sure been a long time since i've been here. I'm not sure if this belongs in this forum, but here goes anyway:

i'm 18 years old, and female (if gender helps), and I weigh 150 pounds. At the end of last august, I weight 128. I gained a few pounds from steroids I was taking for a sinus infection, and I kept at that weight of 136 for a few months.

In the beginning of may, I weighed myself and I found out I was 132, which made me happy. But then 3 weeks later, I weighed myself at a friend's house and I saw that I was 144, and only 2 days after that I weighed myself again and I was 147  . I thought that perhaps my friend's scale had gone haywire, but I went in for a physical exam about a week later and my doctor confirmed that I was indeed 147.

...............

In an attempt to drop these extra 20 pounds, I tried to eat less...I tried to cut my calorie intake down to roughly 1000 calories a day. It was through this "diet" that I managed to gain a pound somehow. And with all the parties and picnics i've been forced to attend this past month, I probably am over 150 by this point. I am currently trying to stick with my diet of 1000 calories a day (although sometimes I take in less than 1000, which makes me happy ^-^), and I do my best to monitor this by keeping a strict food journal, writing down everything I take in, unless it is water. I have not weighed myself for quite some time, so I don't know where my weight stands currently.

I've tried the "apple cider vinegar" diet, but gave up on it the very da I started it because the mixture of water and vinegar was far too powerful for me. I had tears streaming down my face as I drank it little by little; in the end, I think I got a couple of spoonfuls down. Starting tomorrow, i'm going to go on a hunger strike until the 30th, when there is yet another picnic I have to attend. And yes, when I say "hunger strike", I mean i'm going to be starving myself to the best of my abilities. I know it's not healthy to do this, but I am desperate; half of my jeans do not fit me because of the inches i've gained on my stomach. I starved myself last summer as well and I managed to lose quite a bit of weight.

...................

Eh, I went off on a tangent, didn't i? I apologize. My real question is this: is it at all normal to gain 14 pounds in less than a month? I don't recall changing my eating habits in may to the extent that i'd gain such a massive amount of weight. Is there any kind of internal problem that can cause this weight gain?

Any help or advice on this matter would be sincerely appreciated.

Sounds like you either intake to many calories or not enough. Its not eathy to intake less then a thousand calories or to cut that many at once. You should lower your calorie intake about 100-300 calories to sucessfully lose weight. Also low thyriod can play a huge contribution to weight gain ( I should know I have a hypo active) go to the doctor and have them run blood tests.

Drink a ton of water and exercise.

Good luck

Just by cutting down your intake of food and calories, doesn't mean you're gonna loose weight and keep it off... Sure, you'll lose it, but when you start eating junkfood again, it'll come right back. Try eating 6 small meals everyday.

Crash dieting on one food substance like apple cider vinegar or cottage cheese, won't help. Try eating all food groups, especially fruit and natural things with natural fat and sugars. Just make sure your stomach content, while trying to cut down on how much those foods are in calories. Jog for 20 minutes 4 times a week, or power walk everyday. Just try to get your heart rate up! :] swimming laps at the gym is a great way to tone and lose calories, fast. It's the number one sport for fast weight loss.

Hope that helps!

Hey

you guys all have some good advice, but i'd just like to add, for good measure, that starving yourself will only hurt you in the long run -- health-wise and weight-wise. You don't say how tall you are -- i'm 5"8, and 150 is a good weight for me. It's important to consider other things besides weight also -- like body mass index, muscle mass and fat percentage. When you starve yourself, your body goes into a type of hibernation mode where it will hang on to every last calorie you put into it -- your metabolism slows, so that when and if you eat, you will put on more weight. You will lose your muscle mass and gain fat. And probably develop nutrional issues if you keep it up.

Think of your body like you would think of your car or your bike. Maintenance is important, and so is fuel. In my opinion, you should throw out the food diary and just keep an eye on the type of food you're eating -- up your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, fats that are good for you, fibre, and healthy proteins -- depending on your body type, it may be best to avoid animal proteins, which take a long time to process (depending, that is, on what type of meat it is). And then exercise. Getting toned will help keep your body at a more consistent weight -- muscle mass raises your metabolism.

Good luck, and be healthy
