Under the Influence of Amphetamines During Conception Posted: 07-24-05 19:19pm
I have not done amphetamines in years, but
unfortunately both my partner and myself
were under the influence during the time
of conception. I have not used since
then nor will I during pregnancy. What
kind of risk factor is involved with the
sperm and egg? I am also 40 years old,
but in good health. Can I still have a
healthy baby?

Your baby should be just fine. I used to
run in those circles and I know many pple
who did meth until they found out they
were pregnant, some who continued until
birth and until now, no birth defects or
miscarriages.

I just recently had the exact same
scenerio scare me half to death. I spoke
to the doctor about it and he informed me
that if either the egg or sperm would
cause a problem upon conception, your body
would instinctively reject it causing a
miscarrage to occur. If the baby is
carried beyond the 12 week time period
when miscarriages most frequently do
happen; at that point in time you share
the probability of having a healthy baby
with those who have never smoked a
cigarette throughout their entire lives.
So good luck, and know you are not alone
in this journey.

This was really reassuring, thanks...
I got out of treatment in march and within
days I was smoking meth again ... Like
always, my addiction progressed and I was
shooting dope the first nine weeks I was
pregnant and thought my missed period was
due to the amount of weight i'd lost. I'd
taken two home pregnancy tests, one at 6
weeks and one at 9 weeks and both were
negative - the same day I took the 2nd
test, I had a friend take me into the
clinic where they confirmed I was in fact
pregnant and I haven't touched crystal
since.
A friend of mine had a baby who was taken
away by child services ... She got clean
and kept in contact with the adoptive
parents and she found out within the first
year that her child had slight mental
disabilities and severe vision problems,
presumably due to amphetamine abuse ...
When I spoke with my doctor, she just said
my biggest risk would have been
miscarriage in the first 12 weeks and
since then i've been picturing my friend's
child and praying mine won't turn out the
same. So thanks for the reassurance ...
This child has given me a reason to get
clean and i'm hoping it won't suffer from
my past mistakes.
