does anyone know if mate tea is o.K. To
drink if you have sle? I just bought
some because I tried a sample and I liked
the way it tasted. I came back to my
computer and of course read everything I
could find on the net about it and I found
some contradictory information. Please
if anyone has any idea let me know...
Thanks

Lupus & Yerba Mate Posted: 11-17-05 01:26am
This post has raised some issues with me,
as I just got home from the hospital after
a 2nd t.I.A.(6 years from the 1st) - no
known cause except for lupus, as my labs
all came back normal except for the ones
related to the illness. I had just
started drinking yerba mate tea as an
alternative to coffee, and just prior to
the mini stroke I experienced a face rash
after my 5th day in a row of drinking just
one cup a day of the tea. I would be
interested in knowing if there are more
people out there with weird reactions to
mate.

Hi,
i have lupus and i've been for some time
investigating any possible interactions
between this disease and mate-tea. I
contacted alua, the argentinian
association of lupus patients (who should
know about this, as mate is consumed
widely in argentina and other south
american countries) and they assured me it
was ok to have mate-tea while suffering
from lupus.
However, I would be really grateful if
anybody else could give us any feedback.
Have you actually noticed if mate makes
your lupus worse or causes a flare?
By the way, I don't notice any negative
effects from my mate drinking... However,
when I do have a flare I suspect of
everything... Of course.

It may not affect most sle patients, but
if you have had episodes of vasculitis, or
stroke, I would advise staying away from
anytihng that would trigger it..
I liked the tea alot- until I had a
mini-stroke. I work in the field of
nutrition, and have a lot of professional
resources at my fingertips (literally).
Mate is used by millions of people, and
you'll always hear both sides of the
issue. Just be informed, be aware of
what your triggers are and learn to spot
an upcoming flare before it's out of
control.
Good luck!
