Hi,
ever since I was in 4th grade i've had
problems with spilling ketones. I
remember for at least one year I had to
have snacks during school before and after
lunch. Until the age of 16, I would have
ketone episodes usually twice a year where
I needed an iv.
I'm now 24 and things have been really
good, until a year and a half ago, maybe
two years ago. That is when I started
feeling shaky, light-headed, naussea and
would get bad headaches if it had been
four or so hours since eating. Eating
something would usually make me feel
better, unless it had been five or more
hours since eating.
Within the last year it has gotten to the
point where I get symptoms around the
three hour mark. Four hours is my max
and sometimes the symptoms appear after
two hours, sometimes even sooner. Food
sometimes helps and sometimes it just
makes me feel worse.
In june I was hospitalized for dehydration
and my glucose was a little low and I was
spilling ketones. My doctor (who has
been my doctor since I was seven and is
really good) said i'm hypoglycemic and he
thought I knew that. He said he wants me
to eat every two hours and said I need
complex carbs.
I don't check my blood sugar and i'm
wondering if I should. Some days I feel
great and other days I feel like crap.
Some days I can go four, five and
sometimes six hours (if I have too)
without eating. And if I miss my evening
snack or don't eat what I normally do, I
feel awful for a few days.
I do have a neuromuscular disease, which
already makes me tire out easy and so I
have no energy at all when I experience
hypoglycemia symptoms. My disease makes
it difficult for me to eat certain foods
(i have a tight jaw and have trouble
swallowing certain foods), so I know I
don't eat as good as I should. It is
also hard for me to eat so often.
I'm just looking for advice, suggestions,
ideas, etc. Is there some kind of
supplement I can take? Any input would
be great!
