Tongue Infection
Posted: 08-03-05 20:02pm

Hi all

I have been troubled with this very strange recurrence. I have some infection of some sort on my tongue. It looks like bite marks. It always occures on the side of my tongue. These strange infections are very painful and feels like my tongue is swollen, and it affects the way I speek.

The tongue infection is present for sometime and usually goes away after a full week! Finally, this thing hits me once every month, but lately it come about every 2 weeks.

If anyone here can give me any advice or possible answer to what I have or what is causing this I would be so thankul.

Thank you

Hi,

i have the exact same problem with my tongue. It's comforting to know know that i'm not alone  . I have used all kinds of local oral remedies but these don't seem to have any effect at all.

I do have a chipped tooth on the one jaw and now and again it cuts my tongue - I need to have it filled or removed. But then again I do suffer this infliction even on the side of the tongue where I have normal teeth. The worst affected area is right at the back of the tongue.

I have sort of identified some aggravating causes - alcohol, spicy foods, and dried meat - and for now i'm abstaining from these! Other than these I cannot explain this problem!

Please help!

I have had this symndrome for several months and I have researched and researched for infomation since none of the specialists I have gone to can pin point this feeling and sensation. You would not believe how many people are victims of this symdrome; I refer to it as a syndrome becasue there is no known origin of this; and it has no known cure; there is no real explanation for people to exprience this; however, many people do for short periods of time and some forever and I hope that ours will be temporary. I found that it is referred to as "burning tongue syndrome" and it can be caused by sooooooooooooo many things from pre-menapause; menapause; oral habits; neurological issues; allergies; psychological disorders, nerve damage, medications, endocrine(ear, nose and throat) problems, hormonal imbalances, certain foods and on and on...So what are we to determine from all of that? I have at time thought I was loosing my mind until I started researching and found that I too am not alone and that disturbs me. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy...It's aggrivating, annoying and it make me feel abnormal. I have to actually psyche myself out to believe that it's not there at time just to function. I also have some other symptoms like constantly ringing ears. So if either of you get any real results from a doctor, please let me in on it. I have gone to several sepcialist and continuing to go to spcialists to get answers....Prayfully, we will...

I have the exact same problem as well and it started after a tooth got chipped which has a very large filling I will be getting the filling removed on the 10 of may 2006 my dentist tells me the nerve is dieing and it may be leaking a mild infection which can cause my problem with the tongue touch wood I hope so he is going to do a root canal and replace the filling with a different type of filling as he tells me some types of older fillings can cause problems over the years especially the cheaper type of fillings given on the nhs health plan in the uk I will update my post as I get treatment and more info on what my dentist is using

Traditional chinese medicine might help, drink water, is it swollen? Probably is. It's your teeth pressing against the tongue,(or vise versa) but tongue is more than likely swollen.

Look online or see an nd, md's aren't much help!

well what I have to say may seem very odd but it worked for me how I have no idea?? A old fisherman who was on the same canal as me enjoying a good day out and we had a chat and got onto what's what's in life and he told me about some anglers who get the odd mouth infection from handling bait, maggots blood worms etc fish and so on and said a old treatment was to wash your tongue with a diluted mixture of washing up liquid dishwashing soap with a baby tooth brush rinse out well then rinse with 5 parts water to one part hydrogen peroxide for a couple days and hell it went after 4 days but for the first two days my tongue was a bit raw but it calmed down and I am almost free of this nightmare now I have only a slight irritation on my tongue now the roof of my mouth is clear and the back of my tongue is clear and I only notice it if someone mentions it to me it’s great I rinse twice a week with 5 parts water to one part hydrogen peroxide regularly good luck all may this help you

It's such a relief to see that other's have gone through this same problem. I have done so much research and always come up empty handed.
I also get what looks like bite marks on the side of my tongue everytime I get dental work done - even a teeth cleaning.
I also have done the same treatments to try and control it - hydrogen peroxide rinses, salt water rinses, mouth wash, brushing and scraping my tongue. It gets the worse when I first wake up.
Something I've noticed is when it's at it's worse I have some kind of head congestion mucus-y type head cold. The mucus coats my tongue and when I eat sugar-y type foods they form a really gross film on my tongue.
I had one dental expert online suggest that it could be some kind of allergy to something they use during the dental work. I have yet to get an allergy test since I need to find a new medical doctor first .. and this also requires me to call my dentist up and get his help with every possible material and substance that could possibly be causing this allergy.
if anyone is interested, i could post a list of the suggested allergies to get tested for.

Swollen Tongue Canker Sores
Posted: 12-26-07 17:12pm

Help! My husband is a big bear! He gets a recurring swollen tongue and canker sores all over his mouth. His tongue looks like he has been chewing on it and there are literally pieces of flesh missing off the edge of it in some areas. He has tried all over the counter remedies and has taken benedryl in case it is an allergic reaction to something but it does not help. I feel so sorry for him because he can't eat. Does anyone have any suggestions...we are desperate! Sad

It's Bruxism. many people have it including myself. It's stress related. Some people grind their teeth. Some people clench their teeth. Others like me bite down it leaves bite marks on the sides of their tongue. If you have sharp teeth and /or spaces between your teeth (I have both)that makes it worse because your tongue is being pushed into these spaces between sharp points causing the cuts. I spoke to my orthodontist about it and she just told me to stop doing it, which I thought was ignorant.
I usually do this at night and wake up in the morning to find painful cuts on my tongue. What I usually do is if one day I wake up and i realize I was biting on my tongue, during the day if I can i try to fill in the spaces with orthodontic wax or put something between my teeth like gauze or gum to stop my tongue from even going there in the first place. You should do this at night too because that's when the worse work is done.
Some doctors suggest exercise to release stress. Hope this helps!
