Please Help! Terrified of Air Planes!!! Posted: 08-06-05 23:21pm
I have not been on an air plane since rite
before 9/11 and even then I was terrified
of planes and I would always get sick and
throw up...Well most of the time. I am
going to italy pretty soon to visit family
and its an 8 hour flight over the atlantic
ocean...Im so scared and it may sound
silly but I just have images in my head at
night of something going wrong and
crashing and dying, just things like that,
and then I start to cry...Does anyone have
any advice for me? Please help!!!

I have the same problems and 4 months ago
I had to fly back from asia to europe, 2
flights, 7 hours each. The first one was
hell.. Panic attacks, nervousness and the
plane shook for the whole journey. I
drank lots of wine.
The second one I was adament about not
going on. I was like "screw this" but I
had to ofcourse. And luck would have it I
sat next to a doctor which calmed me down.
I drank more wine and it helped.
I hate flying, but the statistics are
true.. Its safer than taking your car.
Good luck and I am 100% sure it will be
fine. Get some zanax if you are really
freaked out.

Hi,
i am a pilot myself and trust me, nothing
bad will happen on your flight to italy.
Very rarely these days do major things go
wrong with the aircraft that will cause a
crash, think how many aircraft fly
everyday, and then think how many
crash...? Just try to relax, and I would
advise you to look up some
breathing/relaxation techniqes.
Hope this helps,
james

Ah, yes, I remember my first jet ride.
It was from indy to new jersey and the
from new york to athens. I was petrified
and that was before 9/11! Needless to
say I white-knuckled it on both trips, as
well as the ones back! I'm terrified of
them still . . .

Don't Be Worried! You Can Do It! Posted: 07-17-06 17:27pm
Luckily flying on a plane is not something
im worried of, but trust me I know anxiety
more than too well. I'm only fifteen,
but this informatio helps anybody with
anxiety. I've had anxiety for almost
three years now. The craziest part of it
all is that it's an anxiety about getting
sick(throwing up). It's so embarassing
to have so huge life altering problem over
what...Yeah just throwing up. I've been
through all sorts of meds, counselors, and
anxiety programs, and heres basically what
I have taken from all of this. The mind
is the most powerful thing ever(mine in
particular), and if you let it loose, it
will take you for a wild ride. In and
anxiety program I am currently going
through we had discussion about 9/11 and
how it affected more people gettig
anxiety. The program recieved hundred of
thousands more people after nine eleven.
So heres my tips for the airplane:
1. I know it may sound stupid, but talk
to yourself, you are calm, you are in
control, you are in control of all of your
feeling.
2. Deep breath- I laughed when they first
told me about it but if you do it right it
works. Count in two breath through the
nose(one one thousand two one thousand),
then breath out the mouth try to do four
breaths (again counting one one thousand,
two one thousand, etc.) there are so many
relaxation tapes and techniques you can
look up or buy
3. While your in your chair sit, eyes
closed, and deep breath for as long as you
want, then muscle relaxation start a the
toes relaxation each muscle until u have
gond u to your head.
4. Think of a peaceful place and picture
it in your head in this place you are
safe, calm, happy, serene, and in controll
always.
5. As for the vomiting, anxiety can
actually make you sick! Yup, stuff in
your head can make you physicaly ill. So
I suggest taking one to two non drowsy
dramamine thirty minutes before the
flight, bring saltines to munch on during
the flight and drink lots of water during
the flight. And youll probally find that
the only reason you throw up(if you do) is
because you were syching urself out
6. Get comforatable: to avoid
uncomfortable feeling on the plane take
dramamine, and airborne(found everywhere)
7. Decide you will be fine
i know you'll be 100% fine if you only
believe that
you can do it
hope I helped a little

Terrified of Flying Posted: 07-25-06 15:09pm
I know it will sound crass saying this but
it is far safer to fly than it is to
travel by car. Remember just how many
hundreds of flights take place every day
and just how few crashes there are
compared with the number of world wide car
crashes.
As a previuos poster has suggested focus
on a nice place and try to switch off for
the journey. Maybe play some relaxing,
tranquil music through your walkman of
ipod and switch off.
Don't drink lots of booze though as this
will just de-hydrate you and make you feel
worse. Sipping water is much better.
