Expense of Braces
Posted: 08-07-05 17:21pm

Hi all, i'm new to the forum...Just found it today and seems very helpful :) so i'm working on trying to get braces cuz i'm sick of my teeth being crooked. I'm 23 and for the first time in my life I have a dental plan so I want to get it all out of the way. I have an overbite as well and i'm terrified that I will need jaw surgery? Has anyone out there had braces with an overbite and not get surgery?
Also about how much are braces cuz my bf says we can't afford them, but I feel this is my only chance and I want to do it
thanks

Hi, welcome to the forums! I just recently got my braces @ 28, and unfortunately my insurance doesn't cover adult orthodontics so by the end of it all I will have dropped $6000. Or course I got ceramic on the top teeth and my teeth, on a scale of 1 to 10, were given a difficulty level of 11. Sure that's expensive, but i've only had them about 5 months and it's been totally worth it. My self-esteem and confidence are through the roof now.
I have 100% overbite and they haven't talked surgery . . . Yet. I'm hoping they can just correct that with the rubberbands.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for commenting back fuddy :) it did help..I have a consultation appointment on sept. 26th. August was all booked up so I will have to wait. I also want to do it for confidence cuz I have none lol. I always try to hide my smile in pics too. But yes, I supposed the price depends on the difficulty of the job. And that was reasuring that you didn't need jaw surgery...Hope I won't either ;)

Good to hear that. Braces really do help. My teeth were so bad (had fangs and extreme crowding and my lower incisors were basically cutting up my gums) that the orthodontist basically said that if I didn't get them, i'd start losing my front teeth.

Just be prepared for the long haul if you do decide to get them. I had to have all my cavities filled and 3 teeth removed. All that got done in about a six month span, and it was a very uncomfortable time for me, but now when i'm out in public or on stage, i'm not as self-conscious about smiling or talking to people.
It's worth it.

Hi there! Their are so many techniques of working around surgery now adays make sure you check out each and every avenue as I am sure they are not all what they say they are. I had braces when I was younger, the old fashioned rubber band kind, then I had my jaw broke later on thanks to a wonderful husband(not), 6 months with my jaw wired shut, it was heck, now I am losing my teeth because of rsd(a yucky disease).
Good luck to you and keep us posted on what you decide.
