My wife was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism
5 years ago in san jose, california.
After her first visit when she was told
about her thyroid problem, she went back
to do some other tests and then she was
told that she went from hyperthyroidism to
hyporthyroidism. Then few months later
she got another test and she was told by
the same doctor that her thyroid problem
was in remission - meaning that her
thryroid problem was under controlled.
We moved to florida a year after she was
diagnosed. After few months she went to
another doctor and the doctor told her the
same thing, the thyroid problem is in
remission. This doctor is not an
endocrinologist so I don't understand how
he can give this information just by a
blood sample and not knowing much about
this condition.
Well, to get to the point, my wife still
behaves the same way she was behaving 5
years ago in california.
1. Drastic change of mood. She wakes up
everyday upset and then she calms down
during the afternoons.
2. She tends to cry very easily.
3. Sometimes she feels a hot temperature
when everybody else feels comfortable.
4. She feels emotionally a certain way
one day and a different way another.
Here i'm pasting a very good link I found
in the internet about this thyroid
inbalance that basically explains that a
thyroid problemunder remission means
nothing.
i told my wife that she has to see an
endocrinologist because they are the ones
that specialize in this type of illness.
Now she is refusing to go and I dont know
what to do. She even wants to divorce me
and she is not taking care of the kinds
like she used to.
Can someone give me any inputs?

I have hypothyroidism and what you are
describing sounds nothing like it.. It
sounds more like bipolar disorder.. As
far as temperature changes.. Normally the
person feels colder than everyone else..
Does she feel fatigued all the time? Does
she get lighheaded often? Are those the
only symptoms that she has? Anyway, see
if she'll be willing to see a psychiatrist
or something for her moods, and then after
she starts feeling better with that, she
may be more willing to see the
endocrinoligist. If she does have a
thyroid problem, the doctor will just
prescribe her a pill like
synthroid/levothyroxine to take everyday
for the rest of her life.. It's basically
her thyroid in a pill.

I also have a hypoactive thyroid and am
taking levothroid. I also have a sister
who is bi polar. It really sounds like
your wife is bi polar. I am always
colder then everyone else. I was also
tired all the time, my hair started
falling out, I was getting sick really
easily and gaining weight. I never had
serious emotional problems. Maybe your
wife has something else wrong with her.
I totally agree with bd1012. Maybe this
problem has nothing to do with her thyroid
at all..

I will have to sit down and ask her all
her symptoms again, remember this my wife
is going thru this situation, not me. So
it's difficult for me to tell you what
exactly she feels. I have an idea by the
things she has told me but I will have to
collect more information and let you
know.
One thing I can tell you for sure. She
was diagnosed by an endocrinoligist with
hyperthyroidism. Could it be that the
endocrinoligist was not telling the true?

But, I have those symptoms when I don't
take my meds. I also gain weight and am
very lazy-like, not necessarily sleepy,
but like too tired to do anything. Then
again, I had severe depression about a
year ago as well (at the same time I found
out about my hypothyroidism).

Hi! I was recently diagnosed with a rare
type hyperthyroidism. Also, the endo
said I have grave's disease which I guess
a type of hyperthyroidism. I dunno,
whatever. To explain...Only 90% of
hyperthroid patients lose weight quickly.
The other 10% don't like me. So
anyways, I have been suffering with some
mental/emotional issues to for about 5
years since my thyroid problem started.
Your wife maybe really depressed about her
illness or it may be caused be the
disorder. My endo said that most of my
"issues" have alot in link to my
hyperthyroidism. She should defiantly
see an endocrinologist her regular doctor
cannot diagnose it. All most 99% of them
don't know enough about the thyroid to
make a correct call. The thyroid is a
very complicated organ and that is why
there is a specialist for it. Do
yourself a favor and take her to an endo.
The endo may want her to see a
psychologist to see if there is a problem
mentally. This being my opinion, I dated
a man with bi polar and she doesnt have
the "highs" with the bi polar syndrome.
He went from being very mellow almost kind
of a "drunk-like" to a very very very
angry, punching anything he saw in his
path. I'm not saying hers could be that
severe but, from what you describe, it
doesn't sound the same. I think your
wife is suffering a kind of side affect
from the hyper/hypo thyroidism. It
messes with your hormones, what do you
expect? Well, like I said, thats only my
opinion...Dont take it as medical advise!
Its only my experiences that I make the
statements.
Hope it helps! Let me know what the endo
says. :)

I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism about
5 years ago when I was 16, and at that
time I had all the usual symptoms, like
weight-loss, tremors in my hands, fast
heart-rate etc. I was also aching
constantly, I was hyper like a young child
and very moody, I cried at the most stupid
things, I was sensitive to hot and cold, I
had double/blurred vision, my hands were
very sensitive and hurt a lot, and I had
bad anxiety, I had panic attacks for no
real reason, and I couldn't concentrate on
anything.
After being on medication for a while I
was told that I was in remission, but then
I started getting symptoms again, it had
come back, after being put on more meds I
was told that it had gone the other way
and I had hypothyroidism; I put on weight,
could barely walk without having bad pain
in my calves and shins, I felt cold all
the time but I would sweat a lot, I had
some hair-loss etc. Then the medication
for that made me Hyperthyroid again, so I
had radioactive Iodine, it worked for a
couple of months but then I was
hyperthyroid again. Then the same thing
happened again; I was put on meds and I
was hypothyroid again, it's been switching
between the two ever since and I even had
Radioactive Iodine again last year, but
yet again it didn't work. After being on
meds for the past 6 months, I saw my
doctor yesterday and he said that blood
tests show that I'm in remission again
(this has happened a few times) but this
time I'm having symptoms of being
hyperthyroid, but my doctor says that it
has nothing to do with the thyroid gland,
I'm not comvinced, but I've been taken off
medication so I'll see how I go.
