Globus Hystericus

Hi, my husband developed the sensation of a lump in his throat six weeks ago. Basically, as he doesn't like going to doctors, after a month went to an ent specialist who checked his throat and after finding nothing unusual there he confirmed what our gp diagnosed - globus hystericus. Not related to gerd/heartburn. I just wanted to ask and try and find out if anyone else has this, or had this. How they cured/got rid of it and if not, would anyone be willing to share anything that you have found relieves the symptoms? He takes a deanxit nearly every morning, but it's still there most of the time. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Hi,ive had it for a few years and still trying to get rid of it !!

My specialist has told me its either gerd/acid reflux,or its also caused by stress/anxiety although with my own probs, I still reckon its got something to do with laryngitus.

Me Too

I have had these symptoms since I had surgery in jan 05. My Dr. Keeps telliing me that it is a gastro problem, but I have had every test you can imagine and have been taking nexium for 8 months along with several other pills but nothing helps. I say it doesn't help because it is not gastro. I am at the end of my rope so I need some answers to. Some one told me about something called cricopharyngeal spasm. I am going to the Dr. Again on mon the 19th and am going to approach him with that and see what he says.

I Have It Too

Hi, i have had these symptoms for a year now i have been to the doctor and hospital on numerous occasions, i have had all sorts of tests done but nothing was wrong with my throat. A few days ago i started eating small bites of food as i have lived on liquid foods (custard, angel delight etc) for the last year, in 11 days i have only had 1 bad day! It can be done but it is a struggle! Good luck to everyone!

I've had this for years. I did go to bio feedback, and learned how to control my breathing. It seems the more you think about it, the more it's there, and the more it's there the more you think about it. What a vicious circle. . It comes when I'm stressed and when I'm happy. Doesn't seem to matter. Then it goes away for long periods of time. It is one of the worse things I've had to deal with. For me it does seem to be better when I'm busy. Good luck to all of you. If you come up with a answer, please let me know.

Globus Hystericus : Crycopharyngeal Spasms
Posted: 10-01-07 16:12pm

I have been seeing a second ENT surgeon in the UK for a few months now for swallowing difficulties, I've had it for a year now ( the first ENT surgeon I visited just sent me away after a Barium Meal test saying there's nothing wrong and I nearly choked to death 3 months later) . I explained the various symptoms to the second surgeon and immediatly he suspected crycopharyngeal spasms

I have had various tests requested by the second surgeon

24 ph monitoring
manometry pressure test
camera into the stomach and a biopsy

The results were some reflux and low pressure in the lower oesphagal sphincter,

I was then put on Zoton: proton pump inhibitors as the acid produced by the stomach can cause the spasms.

I saw some improvement but there was still an big issue and I was very anxious when eating in front of people due to fear of choking .

Anyway I went off too a spa in St Lucia Caribean for a holiday and to relax . I attended some meditation lessons and then had a one on one session with the class taker called Darren Hosier . I explained about my swallowing problem and other things in my life that were stressing me and asked if he could help .I was so desperate to do anything to help my swallowing and to generally help me be more relaxed.

He used a technique called EFT Emotional Freedom Technique ( he didn't touch as some EFT people will do, but just meditated) . It was Us$80 for an hour session and I had two sessions whilst I was there

Anyway I returned to London and almost immediatly began to see improvements with my swallowing , I gave feedback to Darren via email and he further work on me even from 1000's of miles away.

I visited the ENT surgeon 2 weeks after i returned for a progress check and explained I was now off of the drugs and I have seen further improvement.
I told him about the meditation man and he reckons it was the exact thing I needed . I hadn't realised until this consultantancy that stress/lifestyle was the main causes of my problem and not soley stomach acid as I previously thought .

I can't express how happy I am now , actually making real progress after a year.
