I Dont Know What to Do- I Love Her So Much Posted: 08-11-05 19:40pm
Ive just been told that my nana has breast
cancer and I dont know what to do. My
auntie died of breast cancer when she was
34 and my nan is 82. I dont want to lose
her ans shes talking as if im silly to
worry and she thinks she'll make a full
recovery, how likely is this considering
her age?
I saw my dad cry for the first time today-
im so scared- if I lose her I will feel
like my world is falling apart.
If anyone can make things a bit clearer
for me I would really appreciate it...As
you can probably tell I dont fully
understand what breast cancer means for
elderly people and I dont want to ask my
parents because they're all over the
place
please write back thank you x

I don't remember reading anything about
breast cancer in elderly people, so I
don't think it mens to them any more than
it means to the rest. Breast cancer is
deadly and should be approached
accordingly. You dind't say what stage
your nana is....There are several stages
in the evolution of breast cancer. Here
are the stages and the survival rate: 100%
for stage 0, 98% for stage i, 76-88 % for
stage ii, 49-56 % for stage iii and 16%
for stage iv. The only thing you take
into account is that your nana is very
old, so that means her body is too weak,
so the survival rate should be a little
lower than above. This is the only
difference: elderly people resist less to
this disease as their bodies are weak and
their immune system is weak as well.
What you should do is take her to a doctor
and talk to both her and the doctor to
find the best solution. As she is 82,
some doctors may not take into account an
operation- usually, an operation fixes
things- but in her case, she may be too
weak for anaesthesia; also the doctor must
take into account other diseases she may
have that may not allow her to have an
operation. Also, her recovery time is
double if not triple from a normal one.
You must also consider your nana's wish,
as she may choose not to undergo such a
thing at her age. This is why you need to
talk.
I have heard of natural treatments, but
unfortunately I cannot tell you if they
are for real. I don't know if they work.
But you can try them if your nana wants.
However, bear in mind that as time passes
by, the possibilities become lesser. So
take action immediately.
Also, if you are a female, please know
that breast cancer is a genetic disease.
And since your aunt had it and your nana
has it, every other woman in the family
may develop it. So please, do a test to
establish if you have the gene that causes
this terrible disease and go to periodical
medical examination.
Good luck!

I dont actually know what stage shes at
yet- shes got an operation on thursday
which will tell us. I saw her last week
and shes being so strong. She always
cooks us sunday lunch when we see her and
this time I wasnt expecting her to but she
went all out and made twice as much as she
usually does- is she just trying 2 prove 2
us that shes fine?
Yea im also female but luckily my aunt
wasnt blood related- she was my mothers,
brother's wife and none of my other blood
related female relations (apart from my
nana) have suffered from breast cancer- I
do check regularly but im only 19 so I
never expect to find anything and I dont
but even with only the one blood relation
to suffer should I be extra careful. And
also that its on my fathers side should I
worry bout my mother- she doesnt have any
blood relations to suffer from breast
cancer?
Thank you for writing back- I really
appreciate talking to some 1

Well, if your mother doesn't have any
blood relations to suffer from cancer it
is more likely not to develop it at some
point...However checking regularly is a
must for any woman: both palpation of the
breasts and seeing a doctor. Even if
developing a cancer at some point, if
discovered in the beginning the chances of
surviving are about 99%. And I am glad to
hear that you do check regularly...You are
amongst the very few who do that and I
congratulate you for that.
As for your nana, I don't know what to
tell you. I can't say if she is trying to
prove to you she is fine or not....But
considering the fact that she cooked twice
as much, I would say she is. I think she
is scared just like you but doesn't want
to worry anyone. Why don't you talk to
her?...Tell her you're worried about
her....That you love her...And that you'll
be by her side....I'm sure it will be good
for her to hear it. :)
good luck to your nana! I'll keep my
fingers crossed on thursday.
