Compulsive Over-eating
Posted: 08-13-05 01:07am

Has anyone ever suffered from this? I'm not terribly overweight, but I go through phases like this -- I am not hungry, I am not craving food, but I feel the need to just eat, eat, eat. I used to overeat when I was feeling poorly, but I don't feel particularly upset or depressed right now. I feel kind of blah, but nothing to complain about I guess. I am really obsessed right now with the way I look, specifically my stomach, the way my clothes fit... And whether or not my partner finds me attractive. I constantly tell myself that this will be the last time I eat something without hunger, without considering the calories, etc. -- and I vow to starve myself "tomorrow", even though I know this is stupid. I'm stuck in a cycle.

Ps. I just quit smoking, and although I am chewing lots of gum, maybe my overeating has to do with an oral fixation thing??

It doesn't sound like too much of a problem to me...Unless you suddenly gained 20 pounds over the week or something. Just take it easy, and exercise so you don't let all that calorie stuff just sit there.

Yeah, i've gone through it but when I was getting off certain meds like adderall, wellbutrin, ritalin or whenever I try to quit drinking. My body weight goes from 160 to 180, body fat percentage 7 percent to 15 percent and I flip out(after a month of nonstop binge eating and not working out). But the weight comes off really fast when I start working out again, most of it is just water weight obviously from eating a whole cake or a pizza and a case of miller lite. I'll usually go to the gym for a very long time after a big binge or make myself puke. It is a real problem though because you said you were in a cycle. It will keep going until you find a way to stop or control it. Exercise doesn't always work cause it's anorectic at first but working out can bring on crazy bouts of hunger. Get on adderall for a while, at least you won't be as hungry. Antidepressants almost always cause weight gain except for wellbutrin.

It s of course difficult to say what makes a particular person overeat, as described in these posts.

We can only generalize and see if the theory fits the person.

From a biochemical viewpoint people overeating do so, because without eating they start to feel depressed. It is suggested that what the person is looking for are sweets that gives quick burst of energy.

The brain needs energy to produce its feel good neurotransmitters such as serotonin. That energy is derived form the foods we eat and in particular carbohydrates. Thus people with depression often find relief from eating high carbohydrate foods (containing sugars).

Sugar triggers the release of insulin into the blood stream. This hormone pushes glucose and other nutrients across cell membranes. It then enters the mitochondria of cells (power house) where it is converted to biological energy.

Tryptophan found in food and the forerunner of serotonin - our main feel good neurotransmitter - is left behind after absorption of glucose and is then converted to serotonin. And presto we feel happy!! Thus initially, consumption of refined carbohydrates helps us to avert depression. But this can also cause sugar addiction. But sugar addiction can lead to more serious problems.

The trouble is that if we eat too much sugar, it exposes the body to peroxidation of tissues, leading to all sorts of degenerative diseases. The body reacts to this by shutting down the receptors for insulin. This is called insulin resistance. Although we may have higher than normal blood sugar levels, energy is not entering the cells and especially brain cells that depends very much on glucose as its only source of energy.

When brain cells are starved of energy, in a world of plenty of blood sugar, it will trigger the release of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. This causes the body to convert sugar stores into sugar (energy) to feed the brain again. But these stress hormones are also responsible for the many and varied symptoms of mental illness, ranging from depression, anxiety attacks, alcoholism, drug addiction, uncontrollable mood swings and so on.

Thus overeating is a sign that the body has problems producing serotonin, the feel good hormone.

The treatment is going on hypoglycemic diet.

Overeating

I have never experienced this. I just know that when I am feeling down or bored, I tend to eat more than I usually would. I definitely think you substituting food for cigarettes is very possible.
Learn to accept yourself as who you are at this time. Try not to focus on the problem rather than focusing on the solution. If you eat alot one day, don't starve yourself the next, instead limit your intake of whatever it is your eating. So, instead of eating a whole bag of potato chips, eat only half and so on. It will be hard, but maybe get involved in an activity that will keep your mind occupied for a few hours. Or if you notice an eating attack coming on, go for a run instead or call a friend. Good luck!!! I :d

I know exactly how you feel. I do the same exact thing. I will eat and eat and eat even if im not hungry and I just tell myself that I will just not eat anything the next day..So thinking that I will start starving myself I just induldge in everything. Eating as much as possible to the point of wanting to vomit. Then after I have eaten my way into a state of hysteria I just want to die...If you ever need to talk please email me or add me to your msn maybe when you feel like eating (and the same for me) we can jsut talk to each other instead. Hope you can get through this as I am tryin as well.

God bless
