My 16-year-old brother has been diagnosed
with schizophrenia for about a year. The
doctor first put him on seroquel, which
seemed to help a lot with the psychosis,
but made him drowsy all the time.
Recently, the doctor switched him to
abilify, but now he seems to be slipping
back into a psychotic episode.
I'm interested in finding out what
medications people diagnosed with
schizophrenia have found to be
particularly effective for them.
Many thanks for the help.

I don't think your the doctor is very good
putting him on seroquel. Seroquel is for
people who has schizophrenia and who has
problem sleeping.
The drugs i've tried so far are not very
good. I would not recommend geodon. It
does help with the psychosis but it has
side effects that I have trouble living
with. I even went to the lowest dose but
I still can't handle it. In the end I
stopped but some of the side effects did
not go away. I think my brain is a little
damage but I have no more psychosis.

I am taking risperdal, and so far it is
working well for me. At first it made me
sleepy, but I seemed to have gotten past
that. The only thing I notice is that my
hans shake a little. Of course I am on a
low dose right now (2mg), a higher one may
have more side effects.
I also took olanzapine for a while and it
worked pretty well. It caused me
sleepiness in the beginning also.
