Q: Sunbeds

Hi everyone, just joined :)

i'm chrystal and just about 4 months gone. I just wanted to know, if anyone here has been on a sunbed while pregnant and if it was ok? Or if anyone has had a child who they used a sunbed with while pregnant... I don't plan to use a sunbed as I rather not risk my baby if i'm warned against it but i'm still curious if anyone has had any problems.

Thank you

I've read up on it and they say there is no evidence yet that proves it causes any damage but the midwives still recommend against it. So it's hard to decide what to do, of course i'd never risk my baby but it's so hard to get a natural tan without any sun, and we all want a tan hehe.

Yeah I had a really nice tan going when I found out I was pregnant, and now its faded :( lol but I am out side almost everyday with my kids in the pool, so it kinda came back a little.

I read up on it once I found out I was pregnant, cuz I was scared that I did something to te baby, and I called my doctor, he said he dont approve of it because it rasies your body temp. And thats not good for the baby

Yeh that is the big concern, cooking your baby, but then alot of pregnant women still sunbathe.
It's a tough one.

I always have to wear them messy fake tans, just wish for one I don't have to apply hehe.

Why can't you do a mystic tan? I use them and my tan looks perfectly natural.

i've heard the mystic tan is safe to use while pregnant! I would think thats safer then using the tanning bed.

My sister used this when she was 5 months pregnant for my wedding and was fine. (she checked with her doctor and talked to a couple of people at different tanning salons before doing it) I would very much recommend not sun bathing in a bed....

There is no known facts on tanning while pregnant! The only thing that could be wrong is getting hot, but your going to get hot outside faster than some of the more modern beds. The UV light only penetrates the first 2 layers of the skin. The tanning bed is not like a microwave, the uv rays are not going to cook your insides. I am a manager at a tanning salon and have been doing it for quite some time and at our salon we have a 10min bed that you dont get hot in at all, so I have been tanning in that, I think that it is a lot safer to tan in a controlled environment than outside where your getting exposed to many different types of rays and have more of a chance of over exposure. I did cut back on the amount I used to tan prepregnancy, but until they have proof that there is something wrong with it than I will continue. Everyone knows that the world is completely anti tan because of the obvious, but if you are in a tanning bed it is much more controlled therefore safer. Another problem I could think of is actually getting out of the bed, I struggled with that a little today Very Happy
Also if your worried about why the owners of tanning salons dont let pregnant people tan it is because they do not want to be liable if something does happen to your unborn child. because there is not very much research on the situation they dont want to be accused and possibly sued for whatever is wrong with the baby because at this point the moms to be can say anything that happened to them while they are pregnant and tanning is because they tanned.

why the hell would anyone take the chance of roasting their baby? my doctor specifically told me *not* to go into hot tubs, cause the temp in your body goes up too high for the baby, so *obviously* a sunbed is not a good idea.
common sense people, would you rather be tan, or possibly risk the life of your baby? its not that hard.

why risk it? if there aren't any studies on this then why would you do it? i just think that no one in their right mind would go out for a study for something like that.

i tanned during my whole pregnancy. (except during the winter.) The sun vs. tanning beds? there is a big difference.

Just a random though but laying flat on your back after the 1st trimester isnt healthy for the baby either.. cuts off blood flow .. Trust me I miss my tan....Being pasty isnt fun but I figure i have my whole life to be tan again...Plus spring isnt to far to be getting out in the sun again.

why the need to be tan in the first place? I can see that it is to look nice, but really, I think most women can go without tanning for a few months. Luckily I've never had to, I'm 'naturally brown', but if I were light skinned, I doubt I would dedicate any of my time to tanning.

Like I said I wouldnt go in a bed while pregnant but personally I like to be tan because it makes me feel better about myself.. I feel thinner and healthier looking..Plus my DH lovess when ive got some color.. hahah probably contributed to how we got pregnant in the first place... Honestly Im a little afraid to be in the sun right now.. im trying to avoid getting a pregnancy mask.. Shocked

It is definately not a smart thing to do!!! Using a tanning bed raises your core body temperature which in turn raises your babies. If the temperature gets too high (which might not be too high for you) it can cause brain damage. Most tanning salons either refuse or strongly discourage you from tanning if your pregnant and when you first start at a new tanning salon they specifically ask if you are pregnant.
