Diagnosis: Sinus Infection Dilemma: No Congestion Posted: 08-16-05 21:59pm
My husband has been in bed for 10 days.
After 3 trips to the doctor, one to the
emergency room, and an mri, he is no
better. He is taking an antibiotic
prescribed by the doc on the 1st visit,
almost done dylox, and has had an im of
rocephin. He has no sinus congestion,
breathing clearly. Tonite he presented
with a fever of 99.5 after 5 days without
one. He has sustained a terrible headache
and shooting eye pain. The doc told me
today that the mri showed a sinus
infection, but his cbc came back normal.
Help, how could this be? If the mri shows
a sinus infection, shouldn't his wbc's be
elevated? And if it is a sinus infection,
why would his sinus' be clear? I have
already thought of changing doctors, but
without health insurance do not have many
options. Any ideas?? Thank-you

Get 2nd Opinion Posted: 08-21-05 14:45pm
I would definately get a 2nd opinion. I
have been from dr to dr as well, and my
wbc showed infection / inflammation and
nothing was done. That was 2 months ago.
I have been suffering since. What I am
saying is, get a 2nd opinion and 3rd if
needed. Dr's are only human, they make
mistakes. I lost my little son due to
dr's mistakes. My sinus showed clear as
well, but the ent specialist said there is
a very rare kind of sinus disorder which
is very very difficult to pick up, even on
a scan and it presents with infection and
pain, but when sinus are checked, it is
clear. So go back to the ent.....Just my
2 cents :-)

I appreciate your reply. I have an appt
with a specialist, set up by the same
doctor, but it is not for 29 more days. I
guess it is her medical opinion that it is
okay to run a lowgrade fever for that
long. I was yelled at by the doctor's
nurse and ( I paid their bill in full )
was so upset for being treated like I was
bothering them. I was so surprised by her
attitude, that I could hardly speak.
Although I did manage to get her to try an
antibiotic designed to treat sinus
infections, the first diagnosis was
bronchitis. Glad to say it is working
although I am keeping the appt with the
specialist and getting another doctor. I
had been going to this doctor for 20
years! He has been going for 5. I guess
I am as hurt as I am angry.
I am sorry to hear of your loss of your
child. I cannot imagine anything worse or
anything more sad than losing a child,
especially when it may have been
prevented. As a nurse, I try each day to
be compassionate and to be willing to take
the time to listen to everything. I find
out more significant information by
conversing with patients than I do when I
just ask the questions on the forms. I am
not the fastest nurse, but I hope I am
thorough and kind. The next time someone
gets mad about having to wait, I wish they
could know that it may be helping save
someone's life, or the least of which,
money to diagnose it right the first time.
If nothing else , this has taught me that
time is not always money, it may be a
life.
Thanks for listening. Need to vent? I
will listen....
