Question About Breastfeeding Method of Birthcontrol Posted: 08-17-05 19:39pm
Here's what I would like to know, I was
hoping someone here can enlighten me!
I have a 3 month old baby and am looking
for a safe method of birthcontrol. I
thought I was using the lactational
amenorrhea method of birth control, also
refered to as the "breastfeeding method of
birth control", however, I just found out
that this only works if your period has
not yet returned. Does anyone know why it
doesn't work if your menstration has
returned? It is healthy and normal for
your menstration to return w/in the 1st
month or two postpartum and I
breastfeeding exclusively and on demand!

Your period will not return that soon
after postpartum. Lactating mothers
don't usually have a period for awhile.
Using breast feeding as form of
birthcontrol is not good you can still get
pregnant.

Here is a link to the planned parenthood
website. It lists the lam method as 98%
effective.
sterilizaton was 1.5% more effective.
Also, when I had my girl, the nurses told
me that it was normal for your menstration
to return within 2-4 months postpartum.
Mine returned w/in 2 months although I
breastfeed exclusively and on demand.
This method can be effective when combined
with other precautions like the ovulation
method. (the ovulation can be up to 99%
effective also when used properly.)
