Pain In Side When Running Posted: 08-20-05 21:32pm
I've been running for quite a while now,
nothing too hard core, but I go about 3x
week for 30-45 minutes. Lately after
about 10 minutes of running i've been
getting this sharp pain in my right side,
just under my ribcage, sort of on the
front. Sometimes it's enough to make me
fold in half, and some times it's okay if
I just go back to a walk, but it never
fails to return the second I start jogging
again. What i'm wondering is if this is
serious/if it's something I need to worry
about, and what on earth could it be? It
doesn't really feel like a stitch, and it
usually eases up when I start to walk, but
the second I go back to a jog it kills.
Please help - my first 5k is coming up!

I run everyday for about 30-40 mins
straight, I always get pains in my side if
i'm not use to the amount that i'm
running, or the intensity. It might be
that your bods not use to the intensity,
or maybe you're just too tired that day,
but it happens to me often, even when I am
use to the running.

For some reason it rings a bell that
sideaches are caused by a lack of oxygen.
You might try different breathing habits,
but i'm not an expert, so thats just what
I remember someone saying once. Hope

I'm not sure what that could be. I've
been training for a marathon and i've felt
all kinds of stuff recently. I don't
remember that particular pain being
something i've felt. Even though you
think it may not be a stich, I wonder if
you should try to eat a bananna to
increase your potassium level and see if
that helps. It could be a stich, but
just a stich that you haven't felt before.
As far as breathing goes, my dad used to
tell me to take longer breaths if I
started feeling a pain in my side, but I
think that was more for preventing
cramps.
