Hep C And Pregnancy Posted: 08-24-05 01:59am
I was recently diagnosed and I want to
know if I got pregnant would it be a
danger to the baby? I don't have a doctor
so i'm in the dark and scared. I was
diagnosed because i'm a recovering iv
heroin user and am on methadone. They
dont treat it and I live in tx were it's
hard to get medicaid if your not pregnant.
I do not have health inssurance so can
somebody please help me????? :?

I am pregnant and just found out I have
hep c, it can effect the baby but it is a
low risk 1-5% to pass it on to the baby,
every thing should be okay

I was your age when I was pregnant with my
son. I had hep c, but I didn't know it
at the time.
My son is fine. All grown up with kids
of his own. And, no hep c or other
problems. He's been the love of my life.
Personally, I think you need to be more
concerned with taking methadone while you
are pregnant. Medicaid, or no medicaid,
wait until you are off the methadone
before you think about getting pregnant.
Besides hurting the baby, until you get
off the methadone, you're still addicted
to drugs.

I was a iv heroin user when I became
pregnant with my second child. I started
the methadone program once I found out I
was pregnant. But after hearing many
horror stories of how much more addicting
methadone was than heroin, I stopped
taking it after only one week and had very
minimal withdrawals. Anyway, when you
get in the methadone program they give you
a medical screening, and that is when I
found out I had hep c. My doctor told me
that there is a 1-5% chance that the baby
could be born with it. My daughter was
born last october and at her 2 week check
up she tested positive for it. Her
doctor told me that she will be
periodically checked for it for up to 18
months because in a lot of cases with
babies being born with it, it sometimes
"goes away" after about 18 months.

My father has hep c and my sister and I
turned out fine. I dont know if theres a
higher risk if it's the mother that has
it, though.

There is a higher risk if the mother has
it because she passes on those antibodies
to the child. That's why babies will be
re-checked for it for up to 18 months,
because by that time the baby has had
enough time to build it's own antibodies.
In the majority of these cases, the baby
will not test positive for hep c once it
has it's own. Unfortunately that's not
true in every case.
