Here is the question. I will find out sept 2 if I am prego. I wanted to get opinons from those who have children. My husband and I both make a good income but I wanted to know how expensive is it to have a child. I have heard that its a few hundred $$ difference a month but then ive herd its more like 6-700.00 difference a month. What is the cost of the labor? We just bought a home and move in sept 15th. I just like to plan my life and was curious. Thank you!!

I had a c/s so my labor was about $3,000 and if you dont breastfeed the formula is like $14 a can and they go through a few each week at least my daughter did, diapers are a lot anyware from $10 to 20 a pack it actually gets more expensive when they get older because then they want things  my daughter is 7 and she costs more noe then when she was a baby  anyways we had no money and we did it so im sure you would be fine

The cost of labor is going to vary. I know for mine, it was more close to $10,000. I got that bill by accident. I went in the day before I delivered and stayed 2 extra days cause I tore inside and out and they wanted to watch. Then there was the seperate cost for the fact my son had to stay 4 more days than me, due to his blood sugar.
So it all depends. Formula is costly. My son couldn't have powder so I had to buy the liquid. He was lactose intolerant, so I bought that at $4.00 a 12 ounce can. For the 1st month we spent $40 a week and from then on, it was more than that a week. That's with feeding him food too.
Oh and clothes.... Wow!!! My son is big for his age (13months). I just bought him 6 wide shoes. By october he'll have to have bigger without a doubt.

I live in canada..So I didn't have any hospital expenses. I go through a pack of 90 diapers..Once a month..And they cost about $25 cnd...Which is probably like $ 18-19 for you. And formula cost me $ 40 a month, for about 2 -900 gram cans ( $ 20 )

in the us..Does the government give you family allowance?.. It is based on income here. My husband and I get a cheque for $ 20 a month!..But it can be in excess of $400 a month for one kid if you have a crappy job.

Yeah, its wic (women infants and children). I am eligable for it and will be having my application appointment soon. They send you a small amount of money for basics like milk, cheese, juice, and fruits. Then when the baby is born, they help pay for formula.

But you have to apply and not everyone can get it. They base it on income, and since I only make $17,500 a year where the average 2 bedroom 2 bath house here costs $500,000, I need all the help I can get. Nathan's income doesn't count, since he gets paid cash.

How wonderful it is to live somewhere where medical expenses are paid by the state...

Sometimes when I see how much you people pay I really get to appreciate what I have.

I also live in canada, so everything was free. Here in quebec we get 2 diff types of family allowance it also depends on your income but they give more, i'm not sure how much we'll get but over 100$ from each monthly i'm sure.

As for formula, I buy about 1 case of the liquid kind every week (that's 12 cans) and it's 25$cdn, as for diapers I go throgh about 1 pack of 90-108 every 2 weeks and depending on the diapers it can cost anywhere from 20-40$.

Then yes, there's clothes and furniture, and toys and stuff. I was extremelly lucky and had 2 baby showers for my son (my fam and bf's fam don't get along-lol) so we got tons of stuff. This boy has stuff for years.

Ah just a bit of info on wic, they do not give you money. I was on it up until 8 months ago. And I was on it 13 yrs ago when I had my twins. What you get is wic checks. And on them is written exactly what you can get and when. When your pregnant they get things like milk, cheese, eggs, peanut butter, beans. Once the baby is born if you are breast feeding they add tuna fish and carrots. If you don't breast feed you get the checks for formula only, and only specific kinds. As the baby gets older they add cereal, and then eggs, milk, cheese and stuff. But only certain brands. But I do have to say it's an awsome program and anyone who needs it should apply.

Oh yeah as to the original question. It depends. Luckily I had health insurance for all 3 of my pregnancies and it covered everything, but I saw the bills. My first pregnancy was twins 13 yrs ago and they spent a day in the nicu total cost for them was around $40,000. The second was a singleton 11yrs ago, and was premature by a couple of weeks, thank god he was healthy, his bill was around $8,000. My last one born 8 months ago via emergency c-section came in around $17,000. I noticed my info does not show where I live. Twins were born in pa, the boy in washington dc, and my last one in maryland. Costs will very depending on if you have medical insurance, and what it covers. Where you live, number of babies, and how the baby is born, natural, w/pain meds, or via c-section

holy jess...He must be a little poop monster!...I hope people don't think I keep nathan in $hitty diapers all day. I only go through a club pack ( superstore brand) once month, and I change him frequently. He is in size 3 already!. And as for formula, I get powder...It is a little cheaper, and only go through 2 cans of 900 grams a month. He is eating veggies now tho...So it cuts down on formula consumption a little bit.

Trey has been a big eater from day one tho, hasn't he?

Nathan drinks 7-8 oz a feed 4 times a day, and eats a little jar of veggies a day. I got him weighed yesterday..And there hasn't been a weigh gain in 2 weeks. The health nurse said it isn't anything to be concerned about tho, because he is getting active with playing on the floor, and in his excersaucer..Just as long as he doesn't start losing!
