I am 6 months pregnant (belly now sticking out!) and it is quite amazing how other people would offer unsolicited advise on things you do or planning to do.

I was in a restaurant and thinking of having milk shake for a drink. I placed the order and the waitress (mum) told me that cold drinks (any) is not advisable if you are pregnant because it will make your tummy very big. As a result, it will be difficult for me to deliver the baby. I asked if ice cream included? And she said yes. Any cold food or drink should be avoided.

In another case. My husband and I are planning to move to a 3-bedroom house in order to accommodate a nursery for our baby. I was planning to move before I give birth so I will have time to decorate the nursery and just focus my attention to our baby after I give birth instead of me running around moving things and stuff. I mentioned this to a colleague of mine and she said that it is bad luck to move places / houses before giving birth because you will loose the baby. She said that this happened to her exactly 2 years ago. She lost her 6 month old baby.

I have to admit that the last one scared me a bit. My husband told me not to believe this and stop worrying. There may be mums out there who have been in a similar situation like me. Any thoughts?

Never heard of either of them being true. The doc usually says have a cold drink if you dont feel movement with baby cause the cold water can get the baby to move around.

I am 4 days overdue at the moment. When I found out I was pregnant , I was 3 months, we only lived in a 1 bedroom apartment, so decided to move. We moved to a 2 bedroom apartment last march and so far my pregnancy has been ok.

Just waiting for my baby to arrive now.

Cold Drinks
Never heard of that one. If that was the case I would be ten times the size that I am. I am drinking more than I have ever in my life. Congrates on your baby.

To the post above I hope that your baby will come pretty soon. I will pray for you.

Thanks I hope so.

I'd be huge also if this was true. The doctor tells you drink plenty of fluids any way, so you dont get dehydrated.

thanks for that. It is just a relief to know that these things aren't true and are totally baseless. I guess you are already excited to see your baby. I also hope and pray you get through the delivery soon.

thanks for that. I drink loads of water, preferrably cold. But when you hear these things, sometimes it makes you wonder if you are doing things wrong or incorrectly. It scares me more esp when people say it is bad for the baby. It is indeed a blessing to have this baby. Actually, I had a misacarriage last dec and just after few months, I got pregnant again. Thought we will have to wait for a long time. So I am pretty careful now. But careful in a sense of listening to right advises. Thanks again.

I have one for you, ever heard this one:

if a pregnant woman craves a certain food, like lets say choclate and does not eat it and then touch lets her face. Old wives tale say that the baby will be born with a chocolate spot on thie face. So instead the old fashion women say to put your hands under your butt. If it's going to be born with a spot at least its not on a conspiciuous spot

the only one ive ever heard is that if you crave spicy it will be a boy, and if you crave sweets its a girl. I craved both, and when I heard that I freaked out thinking it would be twins! Lol

that is funny!!! Anyway, I love sweets specially anything associated with strawberry (ice cream, milk shake, candy, etc.) the scan showed it's a boy. I hope this one is not a g**. Lol

 sorry to chuckle but there are some silly tales out there.

When something bad happens to a person they always try to think of a blame, usually the most major thing they did beforehand or whatever, so it's obvious this friend of yours would blame her miscarriage on moving house.
I have no doubt someone drank a bottle of cream sode before a miscarriage and started a tale about all soda pop or ice cream flavoured things were bad for you in case of miscarriage hehe. There are so many to do with pregnancy, becuase it's a very worrying time and anything bad that happens we always blame something we did before it happened even if there was no real cause.
I also think the cold drinks and food one is especially silly as what else would you drink? You can't drink tea/coffee and hot chocolate all day as they are loaded with caffeine, all pregannt need to drink lots of water/milk/fruit juice :)

it is hard not to believe alittle though I know but you also have to think of why they must have started :)

my sister keeps telling me of the one where you shouldn't bring the pram into the house intil you bring the baby home... :?

you hit it right! The loss of her baby was very traumatic. She do mean well but I agree we do associate bad things with events we just did. But it is very enlightening to hear from other people that these things are not true and will not cause any harm to mums and their fetus/babies.

Re: Old Wives' Tale. Is This True?
This is the most ridiculas thing that I have ever heard in my whole life, I moved when I was 3 months pregnant. My house had stairs in it and I had been having dreams before I even knew I was pregnant that I was pregnant and I fell down the stairs so when my husband and I found out we were expecting we moved just to be safe, crazy I know but I beleive that dreams can be a warning. Anyways I am about to have my son anyday now. And he is veery healthy. And I have had tons of cold foods and drinks it will not do anything to you.

Everyone always has some advise - it seems that as soon as your are pregnant a neon sign appears above your head saying "please I need advice and horror storys"
the tales about the baby gear really make me laugh, not having the pram in the house till baby is born, not buying anything till later, etc, if you actually paid attention to all these you would be waddling around the shops on your due date buying the cot, the bassinet, the clothes etc, not my idea of fun and I know our bank balance couldn't handle that. I am halfway (20wks) and the nursery is pretty much ready all I need to worry about now is the smaller stuff - clothes, nappies, etc.

my nursery has been finished since I was 6 months pregnant. I wish I would have waited, I am due any day now and I have notthing to keep my mind busy and off of him coming maybe if I would have bought the stuff and not put it up that would have been better but all moms know that whe you have the baby things just sitting there you cant resist puting them up. I guess all I can do now is just wait.

 those kinds of tales are cruel to tell a pregnant woman, your child is the focus of your life to the point it is part of you and its horrible to stress them... When you move you go through a lot of stress though, the most stressful events are deaths, moves and weddings, and I know a lot of stress can harm health, but I really don't think the actual act of moving, as a "bad luck" thing, would.
