Could This Really Be Biploar Behavior?
Posted: 09-09-05 22:54pm

My father was diagnosed with bipolar / manic depression several years ago. He has always been and overbearing man and never listens to anyone; just loves to talk on and on. Most of the time he seems manic; always on the run; trying to help everyone; in essence trying to have control over what happens to everyone around him. He is very insecure while also being so overbearing that some people avoid him as they don't get a chance to say a word. He has been this way most of his life but for the last 7 years (following some tragic events and attempting to commit suicide) he has been what I would conisder manic. Last week he totally lost sense with reality. He destroyed tables, doors, lamps; punched holes in walls, attempted to punch my mother in the face. He deficated where ever he was standing at will in various places throughout this ordeal. He was like this for almost 2 days before my mother called up for help. He made references to being god and threw my mother on the floor, hurting her arm and head. He was attempting to rape her saying that he was god and she was mary. When I arrived I heard him shouting jibberish; talking quite rapidly and rhyming sentences once in a while. He was absolutely not aware of reality although some of the things he was saying were my names of other family members. I know that you cannot diagnose or offer medical advice. 911 was called and my father is in a mental hospital until depakote begins to help. I am worried for my mother and for my father and anyone else who may be around if this occurs again. My question relates to the behavior he exhibited. Does this sound like bipolar behavior? It is possible that it is even though it might not be typical? If not bipolar what else? I am so confused and worried that he is not getting the help that he needs if he is not bipolar. Thank you in advance for your reply.

It sounds like your father may have issues in his life that he needs to deal with. I have been on depakote for over 5 yrs. And all it has done for me is cover up stuff. Since I have learned to deal with things and stress I have been able to get off of some meds. I can't say if he is bipolar or not....

Yes to me it sound like bipolar behavior. Just in my opinion it sound like he was manic or in a really high mania with phycosis. Just a word of advice never call the cops if a bipolar person is acting like that call the emergancy ambulence of a local hospital. The paramedic know how to and are trained to deal with those types of things. Cops aren't they may use to much forcement and could end up shooting your dad. It's almost happen to me a few times, i've just learn to walk away or go punch the punching bag.
