I was diagnosed with hashimoto's thyroiditis in '98. After years of constant monitoring, my doctor decided it was time to put me on synthetic thyroid hormones (synthroid) this past march. The symptoms are improving (depression, always feeling cold, foggy brain, etc.) but given the hashimoto's and the fact that i'm 35, my doctor recommended that I not wait to have a baby. So, my husband of two months and I are giving it a go ("ttc" as you say on this site!). I'm freaking out a bit though. Anybody out there with hashimoto's have a successful pregnancy??

after my fist child at 21 i developed a goiter and was than diagnosed with hashimot's hypothyroidism...i have had another child and i am pregnant with my third........i remain an advocate for my health and make sure i am properly treated for my condition.......my only problem i have had was during my pregnancy extreme weight gain and depression and tiredness.the nice part is that the weight always drops off very quickly and during my postpartem thyroid labs i usually get my meds increased by like 2 mcg.all in all it doesn't bother too often..i just wonder why i got it so young...i am of a normal body weight well for the time being at 62.5 mcg and a pretty healthy person......i have probably had it for much longer than i have ever known. don't worry your baby will be fine just take good care of yourself and stay on top of what your body tells you and listen.

Hashimotos and pregnancy
My first pregnancy I was undiagnosed with Hashimotos until my son was six weeks old and in the NICU. I was almost in a myxedema coma and my son suffers from many problems still to this day. I was lucky to have an emergency room doctor readily acknowledge my appearance and symptoms. I gained 70 pounds, was wearing sweaters in the summer and sleeping twenty hours a day. After starting Synthroid I lost the weight and was myself again. My second pregnancy was amazing and one hundred percent normal! I only gained 15 pounds and was healthy and active. My baby is healthy and developing normal. The important thing is frequent testing of the thyroid hormone (TSH) and a doctor who understands how important it is to monitor and adjust your dose accordingly. Good luck!
