Is it true that getting an epidural causes back problems later on in life??? My ex b/f's sister was telling me not to get one (even tho I gotta long way to go till delivery) becuz she said alot of her friends who had one, all complain of back problems now.

In rare cases yes it can cause problems but that would be neural problems ( like nerve damage) . Epidurals are also used to treat back problems, used to relieve the pain that siatica can cause.

I have had 2 in my lifetime and never have had children. I have had not problems with the epidural or after it. It did relieve my symptoms for a while.

If you have anyquestions about risks envolved with an epidural ask your ob or an anestheologist. The more questions you ask the better. Believe me they don;t mind.

Im afraid of the risks involved with getting an epidural so I dont plan to ask for one unless I feel like I cant make it without one. Labor is only one day out of your life, although the pain might seem endless at the moment it doesnt last forever.

I am saying this now never having a baby before but I want to feel as much of the birth as I can cause I think about how hard it is on her and think why cant I suck it up to she dosnt even have a choice. So will see.

I started out with such horrible back labor that I really couldn't have chose differently if I had wanted to. That epideral saved me. My back hurt so bad I thought for sure it was going to split open. I started on a monday night with the back labor. The nurse said I had been in labor all that day. I had the epi. After I slept through most of the time until they told me it was finally time to push. My daughter was born at 7:25 am thursday. I have not had any problems with my back, other than the occasional aches and pains from the two car wrecks I have been in. I had the epideral nearly 14 years ago. If I have bad back labor with this child you can bet I will be getting an epi again.

Epi was safe for me. I've had 2 epis one with my 3rd ( didn't kick in til after baby was born) and again on my 4th. By what I know of its relitively safe. There are risks and everything just like all pain killers. But really it was worth it for me. Epis that cause back pain and everything is like one in a thousand ( not 100 % on that)

hi, I have had 3 epidurals, one with each child. I was in labor with my first for 30 hours and there is no was that I could have delivered without it (due to lack of sleep). After the epi and the ability to sleep for a few hours I was able to make it through 3 hours of pushing. With my third I had back labor so bad that I no longer felt my contractions, just the feeling of my body literally being snapped in half like a toothpick. The epidural came after I was fully dialated. The 8-10cm part of labor is pain like nothing you have ever felt and I wouldn't recommend anyone go through that with the technology we have available to us today. Oh and yes I have trouble with my back sometimes, but any women that has carried a child for 9 months then another year or more after will probably tell you the same thing. Its not the epi that causes the back problems its the extra weight, arched back, and odd positioning of pregnancy that causes that.

(not meant to scare, just prepare)

good luck:) and please don't suffer through what is supposed to be one of the best days of your life!!---raina---
