Epidural

Ok the needel in the back is really the best thing I know it sounds scary but trust me it will help. There are others that go in the iv demeral and some more but I have only looked into these two.. Beleive me I am scared of having the epidural ( in the back) but I know that the way my contractions are that I need it. Talk to your dr about these and ask for all infromation on iv drugs

Np hun.. I just want you to have her soon but well with in 2 weeks now. I really hope every thing goes better for you.

Mommy2b06 I hate needles too but its really not that bad its better then the labor if you experinceing them badly. It really all depends on you. Don't be scared. I know you are but its really not that bad plus you forget once you hold your lil one. Why do you think ladies have more?

Sorry about the typos feeding baby... One hand typeing.

Labour, Epidural, And Everything !
Posted: 09-26-05 20:08pm

Hi, i'm 34 weeks with my second, so i've been through a birth already.

Being afraid of it is just so pointless- it's like being afraid your plane might crash etc.- it's so beyond your control, that there's no point in worrying about it, or even trying to plan it too much, because it never goes the way you expect it to either.

For me, my waters broke unexpectedly at 36 weeks, and when labour didn't start within 24 hours, I was induced. I had always planned on just seeing how long I could stand it with no med, and then gradually working my way "up the ladder" so to speak, when I felt I needed it.
Being induced, (by drip) the contractions were pretty intense, so I decided to try the gas after a couple of hours, and that worked well for a while.
Things started getting worse, and I still wasn't dilating much, so I had a shot of pethadine (some morphine based drug) which was just awful-it didn't help with the pain, but just made me really sleepy and sick, and the only thing that would bring me 'round again, was the pain of the next contraction.
Finally, I decided to have an epidural- I had to wait for somebody to come in to do it, and when he got there he had to explain all the risks, and have me sign somthing ( I can]'t even remember what he said, by that point, if he had told me there was a 50% chance my head would fall off, i'd have said, go to it doctor !!!)

the good thing about the epidural is you can't see it- even if you are deathlty afraid of needles, it's behind you !!! Also, there's nothing in the epidural that will pass to the baby- unlike other pain medication.

After I had it, I dialated to 10 cm almost imediately, and I was numbb from neck to toes. I was able to take part in the birth again, talk to my mum and husband, who were there, and enjoy the excitement of it all. I had a little trouble with the pushing, because I couldn't feel the contractions to tell me when to push, but to be honest I think that gave everything a chance to stretch a bit while the baby's head was being born, because I ended up with no stitches.
This time, I will go for the gas again, but straight for the epidural when that's no longer effective. I will skip the morphine.

Don't be afraid, try thinking about what music you'd maybe like to listen to during labour, or practise your masage, or pick out some candles, or aromatherepy oils to burn- you may not get to use any of it, but at least it'll take your mind of everything in the meantime !!!!!!

Good luck.
