Holding My Breath Posted: 09-26-05 19:46pm
I'm an 18 year old girl and have been
having issues with holding my breath since
puberty, maybe even earlier.
A few times i've woken up at night and
gasped to get air because I must have been
holding my breath unconciously.
Mostly it's during the day. It seems like
i'm constantly regulating my breath or I
literally will go about my business with
empty lungs. I feel less focused and
really lightheaded and regulating myself,
forcing myself to inhale, seems to help
but it's getting more difficult.
I don't know if this is a symptom of
anything, but as far as i've researched it
matches whooping cough and retts disease..
But I have no other obvious respiratory
issues (coughing, wheezing, etc) and i'm
too old to be just not getting retts. I
eat healthy and exercise regularly, but
i'm really confused. My doctors are
trying to give me inhalers (and have
labeled this asthma), which I will accept
unless I can get some other idea of what's
going on with me. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
:( this is just making me crazy.

About Your Stopped Breathing Posted: 12-22-05 14:42pm
I'm not really sure what is going on with
that. Sometimes I do the same thing
though, once in a while I hold my breath,
although in my sleep I don't ever wake up
gasping. I have costochondritis, it
isn't a serious problem but sometimes
taking deep breaths hurt which is why I
think I tend to hold my breath at times or
breath swallow. You would know if you
had that though because you get sharp
pains off to the left n right of the
middle of your chest. I think maybe you
are just paying too much attention to your
breathing? I'm not sure sometimes I pay
too much attention to mine so instead of
letting my body naturally breath for
itself I decided to control it. You
could always get it checked out. I was
thinking sleep apnea when u mentioned how
you woke up at night gasping for air.
But hmm just get it checked that it my
best advice.
