Staph Infection, Pls Help Posted: 09-27-05 00:20am
I just had a baby five weeks ago and am
now dealing with an awful skin staph
infection. I have about 12 boils, some on
tummy and some on one side of my breast.
I've been on keflex for 3 days now.
Today I noticed a new boil coming up on my
arm. Does this mean the staph is
resistant to the keflex? Do I need to be
on something else? If an antibiotic is
working, how long does it take to show
improvement? Could the keflex be working
even with a new boil popping up? Please
help, i'm in a hurry to get rid of this
crap. I'm afraid of passing it along to
my new baby. Thank you.

As far as passing it on to your new baby,
I do not know if that is really possible.
But you really need to do something,
because I know a kid who died of a staph
infection. They can be very serious if
not treated properly.
I found this for you, if this helps
this is about staph infections
antibiotics—some strains have become
extremely resistant to
antibiotics—especially in hospitals (1)
resistant to antiseptics, disinfectants(2)
antibiotic resistance:
70% of nosocomial strains are resistant to
at least one antibiotic used to treat them
(3)
greater than 95% of patients worldwide
with staph infections do not respond to
first line antibiotics (penicillin or
ampicillin) (3)
mrsa—methicillin resistant
staphylococcus aureus is wide-spread, if a
strain is a mrsa, it is likely to be
resistant to many other antibiotics. (2)
more than 30% of s. Aureus infections are
classified as mrsa (3)
nosocomial cases can often only be treated
with vancomycin (2) because hospital
strains are usually resistant to many
antibiotics, some are resistant to all but
vancomycin. (2)
some vancomycin-resistant strains have
been reported in the us, japan, and
france. (3)
cases contracted outside of a hospital can
usually be treated with
penicillinase-resistant ß-lactams (2)
however, mrsa strains, once localized to
the hospital environment are making there
way out into the community at large. (3)
i think you might need a different
atibiotic! I hope this helped you!

Staph Posted: 07-08-07 11:40am
I am healing a staph infection on the
front of my lower leg.It started out as a
mosquito bite on Sunday and started
growing.By wednesday it had a red halo so
I went to the doc.She diagnosed it as
cellulitis and put me on Keflex. She said
clean it with a tissue and peroxide. She
said do not touch or try to pop it since
this will cause it to spread. It was so
gross and was very hot.It has taken 2
weeks to finally form a scab.Ive never had
one before.I bought Lysol spray and I
spray my computer keyboard everyday.I
think thats where I caught it since I was
on the computer when I was scratching the
mosquito bite and probably transferred the
staph from the keyboard to my leg.Doc said
its possible since other people use the
keyboard also.

Help! Posted: 11-16-07 01:39am
Ok heres a run down on my situation. I
have endometriosis, and for about 2 years
i have been getting random serious
infections [abcesses, shingles...ect]
but i have never had staph before.
2 weeks ago a bunch of pimple like
postules showed up under my armpit [below
were you shave] and they quickly turned
into staph [it gets to the point now that
i know i am getting an infection before it
shows up] I am allergic to ALOT of
antibiotics from having to use them so
often [about once a month] I know i can
take doxicycline and clindamyacin, so they
put me on doxi 100mg every 12 hours for 7
days, took all of them and it dried up and
went away, in this time i furiously
disinfected my house, everything. Bleach.
got rid of razors and soap to be sure.
about 5 days ago I noticed one postule
growing again, I was at the beach at the
time and when i got home my fiancee took
me to the ER. Same doc saw me and took one
look at it and gave me the same
antibiotics again. Its been about three
days and this abcess has become bigger and
more painful, the top is open [from hot
compresses] but there is a pocket the size
of a marble now [it was about a little
smaller than a pea at first] I have been
taking my meds on time. I am waiting for a
phone call from the advice nurse, im
worried if i go back in he will tell me i
am fine, my body has a tendency to become
allergic/immune to antibiotics, I dont
know how much longer to wait... I want to
go in and tell them I need the vancomycin
but im afraid he will brush me off again
[he didnt even take me into a room to
check it out]
How long should I wait? Should I go now so
it doesnt get worse?

Kjms.. I hope you back to the Er! Don't
Wait! You don't want it to spread!
I am dealing with my 2nd round of staph,
actually goin back to er today cause the
sore on my belly hasn't gotten any better.
Went on Monday and had IV antibiotics and
taking oral antibiotics for 10 days. I
should've noticed a change by now!
Went thru this last month from a bite on
my finger that got infected but my lab
results got lost and i was never told it
was staph, but lucky i had a smart er dr.
then and he shot me in the bum with
antibiotics and gave me some oral
antibiotics to be safe.
But soon as my finger healed I started to
break out with little pimples that hurt,
not knowing what it was. Till I went to
the hopital to get my records on monday
and they finally found my lab results.
Needless to say I went to my regular
hospital for further treatment, which is
where i am off to today.. again. I hope
you are doing better.. Always go with your
instincts, if you feel you need to get
better meds, go see the Dr.!! Good luck!

I am a ceramic floor tiler that has been
plagued with serious knee and fingertip
staphylococcus infections for 20 years,
they become more frequent and now I suffer
from it 3 times a year, if I become immune
to flucloxicillin antibiotics I'm afraid
this will kill me. Let me explain in
simple terms what I think about this, the
symptoms, and treatment. These lesions
start as a small pin sized spot under the
skin that rapidly grows, it feels like a
burning cigarette being held against my
knee and within 48 hours I need a doctor
urgently. Within 3 days I certainly need
a needle & drip treatment from a
hospital. I thought I had a splinter of
tile in my knee and after 2 days of
hacking and slicing at my skin with
needles and nail clips. was put in an
ambulance with a serious staph infection.
I never knew a pin sized spot could be so
painfull. I have heard this infection
called many names, from housemaids knee to
super bug. In its early stage its
folliculitis/cellulitis commonly started
from an ingrown hair ( red, swollen, mild
burning sensation) this soon becomes an
infected spot over night. This will
usually become a serious infection that
becomes too much for the lymph glands in
the groin and armpits. When the joints
seize up thats called septic arthritis. If
it spreads to the bone, it will make you
clench your teeth or scream. I'd say from
experience that the human body cannot
fight it and it will not go away away on
its own. The only Drug I know of is a
full 24 tablet coarse of flucloxicillin,
those yellow & black capsules have
saved my life about 26 times. When the
drug starts working it brings the puss to
the surface. dont be shocked if it leaves
a hole the size of a marble, the infection
eats the flesh and replaces it with puss,
when the puss has been removed you see a
crater thats winking at you. I am at this
very moment fighting it again, I find the
antibiotics work best for me if I assist
them by removing the puss discharge as it
comes to the surface. Today I used
boiling water, Dettol and nail snips to
pull away the puss discharge.
Staphylococcus lives in the nose of many
healthy people ( 20-30% of us ) and they
can live with it but a small percentage of
people like myself are vulnerable to it.
It is caught when stapylococcus saliva
enters the body through broken skin. I
dont think staphylococcus is taken
seriously enough by doctors and nurses,
considering that it's a very serious
infection they seem very ho hum about
it,...ironic that so much of this is
passed from nurse to patient in operating
rooms and wards. I passed it to my
pregnant spouse when our legs touched in
bed She found out first hand what my pain
was like. although it may not have been
the cause of the childs disfigured heart
valve, I'd still be carefull. The doctor
assures me the placenta would have
protected the baby. I still have my
doubts. This is why I hate seeing
sportsmen spit on the field. anyone who
spits in public should spare a thought for
people who work on their hands and knees
in a public place. IF YOU HAVE THIS
PLEASE SEE A DOCTOR URGENTLY. IT MAY KILL
YOU IF YOU DONT

Depending upon the type of infection you
may wish to consider Manuka Honey.
Another Outbreak For Me Too :( Posted: 12-02-07 12:00pm
I am having another outbreak again to! I
went to my Dr. on 11/28 and she said she
didn't want to start me on antibiotics
again so soon since i just got done them 2
weeks ago. These are sore ones to!
The last med I was on was Cippro, she only
gave me this ointment Mupirocin2% to use
on the sores. I don't know what to do
either! This is really scary!
I wash my sheets every other day now. Any
clothes that I wear get washed after they
are worn. I lysol the house, germ-x my
hands. Especially germ-x shopping cart
handles!
I don't go over anyones house cause I
don't want to contaminate anyone, and the
pain and worry of this is making me crazy.
I have so many other health issues this is
just the cherry on the top.
Totally in agreement that Drs. aren't
taking this as serious as it should be
taken.
Do we ever get rid of this? And Do these
scars last forever? I have a pretty nasty
looking one on my leg.

Anne Marie, I'm so sorry you are going
through this. I know in a way what you
are going through. I dont know if this is
with us for ever, its embarrassing
sometimes. when I had it on my knee I
passed it on to my chin because I was
squatting down and my knee connected with
a shaving nick. suddenly I had this big
septic sore on my neck. It wasn't as
painfull as my knee but it did swell up
and become painfull. I wonder why you
havent been given any flucloxicillin.
When I went to the chemist with the
prescription they asked me if I wanted a
cheaper version of the same medicine. I
said no way, my life is at risk and I want
exactly what was on the presciption.
Chemists should not tamper with a doctors
request. Flucloxicillin works best on
an empty stomach but is very affective
with these sores.
Dont stay at home thinking about going
to the doctor, its dangerous, All we can
do to prevent this is wash regular and
perhaps wear barrier creams to keep the
germ from getting beneath our skin. It
gets in through our skin in places that
are broken, scratched, even hair that is
shaved beneath the skin can generate it.
The likely source is in our own noses,
there is a nasal ointment in a tube to use
daily, my doc says it will remove the
staphylococcus bug from my nose within a
few weeks of using it daily. Dont let
anything from your nose get into open
cuts. If you read up on staph, you will
learn that it can live in your nose all
of your life but can be cured. generally
people with stuffy blocked noses carry it.
Maybe you dont have staph but if you do
Good luck, dont let it get you down.

Going to New Dr. Posted: 12-16-07 21:40pm
I went to my primary care Dr. this past
week and since I still have these pimples
that are popping up she is sending me to
an infectious disease Dr. I go on January
8th. I've been doing everything like I'm
suppose to be doing, like I said before,
but I just don't understand why I keep
getting them. So far I have found that the
underside of my arms are the worse! And
also my skin is becoming very sensitive to
the band-aids. Some of the sores that get
big are the ones that get the thick pus
plug i call it. yuck Very painful too!
I shower daily never wearing anything more
than once, and change bandages twice a
day, washing areas with Band-aid
Antiseptic Wash, then applying Bactracin
and a bandage. Sometimes my pimples get
itchy, does anyone else have this to? oh
yea, i also filed my nails down to. I just
want it gone. I can't hold our new
grandbaby till i get rid of this! boohoo
Have a Merry Christmas!

Damnit! Posted: 01-07-08 15:16pm
Hey its me again, staph....4th time. Same
spot, it just keeps moving down my side,
last time they cut it open and i was
relieved it was gone for a month!!!!!!!
But then it suprised me and came
back(BOO!!!!!!!) Doctors put me back on
doxicycline (ONLY antibiotic im not
allergic
to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Scary
huh?))))))) And bad news, its been 2 days
and on it and i grew another bump. How do
you get a doctor to actually listen to
you? They all keep brushing it off, Ive
had this 4 times (3 in a month then a one
month break, thank god) and i cannot
afford to become allergic or immune to
this antibiotic especially when im prone
to infection, its such a wierd place its
in, I dont even touch that area!!!!!!!!!!
Ive washed my clothes constantly,
bedsheets, threw away countless
deoderants, using sanitizer like its goin
out of style....i mean there is nothing i
can think of to do anymore, no doctor will
take the time to figure out a solution, I
want them to put me on vancomycin, I want
it to be done with, kaput, im so sick of
it. I mean literally, I woke up with
severe flu and staph....my fiancee has a
weakened immune system and often has cuts,
he doesnt get staph, I have cuts on my
fingers all the time(i pick at my nails, i
know its bad for you) and none on my
fingers.....I mean what!!!!!!! Anyone know
how to get a doctor to listen to me/. I
mean they are dabbling with my life here.

Staph Gone Posted: 01-10-08 20:10pm
I didn't have to go to the infectious
disease Dr.. cause my staph is all cleared
up!! for now at least!! 3 weeks ago i ran
out of my meds i take for my intercranial
hypertension, diamox & topomax, and
within a week my sores all healed and no
new ones developed! I was with out my meds
for a little over 2 weeks. So I am
thinking that they were interferring with
my immune system and the antibiotics.
Kjms, you really should go to an
infectious disease dr. that is what my
primary dr. wanted me to do when she
couldn't resolve the staph.
Also, if you are on other medications you
may want to check with your primary Dr. to
see if they may be blocking the
antibiotics from working.
I did go and sit with Santa the day before
Christmas, and he asked what I wanted and
I told him I just want to be healthy this
year, cause last year was not a good year
for me. And since I believe in Santa I
guess he granted my wish!
keep us posted

No. There are no spec. for staph
infections. Though you may want to have
them do a blood test or swab depending on
where your staph is located. This will
tell them which antibiotics the staph is
resistant to. Which should tell them which
antibiotic to treat with. Staph infections
are very tricky and sometimes are hard to
get rid of. Some people require IV
treatment.

I have had times when I had an infection
and could not get rid of it. So I used the
following method. You can use it when you
are taking antibiotics also. This really
works but you must use it several times
until the infection have drained
completely.
Activated charcoal poultice
1. Grind 1 tablespoons of flaxseed
(this have healing properties)
2. Mix flax meal together with 1-3
tablespoons of charcoal powder.
3. Mix with a little water to form a
wet paste. It should be moist but not
crumbly or drippy.
5. Spread the jelly evenly over an
appropriate size damp paper towel.
6. Cover the jelly with a second cloth
or damp paper towel.
7. Position poultice over the area to
be treated (i.e. - liver, stomach,
kidneys, spleen, knee, eye, ear, tooth,
infection, sting or bite area).
8. Cover the poultice with plastic
(plastic food wrap works fine) cut to
overlap the poultice by an inch on every
side. This will keep it from drying out.
If the charcoal dries out, it will not be
able to adsorb
9. Finish off by bandaging or taping the
poultice securely in place. Leave it on
from 7 hours, if applied during the day,
or better yet, overnight. Remover and
another poultice can be applied.
Note: Poultices of any kind only work if
there is continuous moist contact with the
skin.

Whoa, slow down here a moment. If you have
not had this looked at yet ( I am going
over old posts) please have this looked
at. There is more out there now then just
staph along. That can be treated, just
with a different antibiotic that they
would not normall look for. MRSA really
should be ruled out IMHO.
