Anyone ever have one of these tests before? I have to get one and I was just wondering if they were really painful.

Hi there...

My name is holli and I am an xray tech who has helped radiologists perform hsg tests. The test can be uncomfortable, some women would say even painful, but not only will it just show if your fallopian tubes are open, it could help open them if they are not. When the xray contrast - dye- -goes through your tubes to do the test, it could actually remove blockages from them. So it would definitely be worth the pain...

Good luck

I've had 3 hsg's and none of them were painful for me. There is some cramping though...And my dr advised me to take 2 aleeve about an hour before having the test done.

The only time i've heard of actual pain was when there was a blockage in one of the tubes.

For me...It was as if I was having typical af cramping.

Ask them when they are doing the test if you can watch too! It's a great distraction from the cramping..And very cool to watch

good luck with it!

I have had an hsg done before and for me it was painful. Only because I have a very small cervical opening and when they inserted the tip to insert the dye it hurt badly and the whole time I was uncomfortable. Anyways good luck! My fertility specialist told me that often women will get pregnant within 3 months after having this done.

I am having this done next week as well, and I was concerned about the pain too. I'll let you know how it goes!

When are you having yours done?

 hi

i had one of these tests done a week ago and I found it more painful then labour pains! I also have a friend who's been trough it and she agrees with me. Somebody above mentioned that a blockage could make it more painful...Will I only have one good tube, the other one is blocked off so probably that is why it was so painfull for me.

Good luck and I hope things went well for you. It did for me...My other tube was in good shape.

I had a HSG performed about a 1 1/2 years ago. I was told to take ibuprofen before arriving. I would agree that it is quite uncomfortable. Definitely stronger than a menstrual cramp during the fluid infusion. Luckily it doesn't last too long. I only had one tube appear and it was inconclusive on the other tube. I was told it could have been in spasm or possibly blocked. 4 months later I conceived and had a second miscarriage. That baby was ovulated out of the side which was in question. So just because you don't see the tube appear on the screen doesn't mean that it is blocked, it maybe only in spasm.
My advice is to take the ibuprofen or whatever your doctor recommends before arriving. Don't worry it will be over before you know it.

Good Luck!

I'm scheduled for amniocentesis this week. Anyone had both a HSG and amniocentesis? How do they compare in painfulness?

I had one couple of months ago, and I too was told to take Advil before hand, and I did. It was very quick. I had a 20 seconds of bad cramping during the dye ingection and then it was just pressure. Don't worry, it will be quick and it really isnt that bad.

Well i just had one day before yesterday/ an im 20 years old an didn't take no medicne, because nothing works for my cramps.Everything went fine untill they injected the dye i started to feel so much pressure in that area it do feel worse then period cramps. It was hard for me to turn over on my side but my boyfriend had to help me i also held his hand, so you should probably do the same when you the pain hit cha. Also on my way home i was still cramping for about a hour then i had some spotting. two days later i still have some spotting but no cramp. Just remember to take your medicine an hold your boyfriend hand. GOOD LUCK
