Accuracy of a Scan?

Hey everybody. My doctor has booked me
for a scan in 2/3 weeks(not sure what sort
of scan it is though) I just need to know
whether this scan will show for definite
if I am pregnant or not becuz my urine
test showed neg. And blood test showed
one high hormone. So should I go by
whatever this scan will show or should I
have another urine/blood test after the
scan to confirm the scan results?

I'm guessing by scan that means
ultrasound. And yes, that should be able
to tell u if ur pregnant. Good luck

If you are getting an ultrasound, if there
is a baby in there, it will find it. If
nothing is found, then you aren't
pregnant, the ultrasound is very accurate.

And they'll probably do an internal scan
so those are super accurate! Just a
warning....They're gonna stick it up your
vagina, it's a lil uncomfortable but they
can see the smallest sac by doiing one!

Yes, I forgot to mention what lil blaze
mentioned haha. Your probably going to
get a sonogram rather than an ultrasound
(the ultrasound is through your belly).
The sonogram is this long rod thing that
is put in your vagina. Once its in
there, I didnt really notice it, except
for the fact that they kept moving it
around and sometimes it felt like they
were going to freaking jab the thing
through my vagina wall or something haha.
But I also happen to be very tender down
there.
It wont be that big of a deal. How far
along are you expected to be if you are
indeed pregnant?

U guys are all scareing me even more
now... All my doctor said was that she'l
book me in for a scan so shouldn't that
mean just a normal belly scan to detect a
pregnancy, and how many weeks I am and
make sure babys ok. Why would I need a
internal scan and that other thing a
sonogram or watever becuz im sooo sure
they didn't do these tests before so what
if all these new tests cause more harm
than good and would I have to have them
(why is it sooo important). Everyone here
givs more support than doctors these days,
my doctor never even thought to let me
know what scan she was bookin me in for
 so fanx all u guys becuz if u lot
didn't post id b mental by now-i mean the
way im stresin just carnt help it tho.

No don't be scared, I didn't have a belly
u/s till I was 12 weeks along at my 5
week, and 9 week u/s they did it vaginally
cause the stomach one doesn't really
detect anythign till later on.
And sonogram/ultrasound/scan all pretty
much mean the same thing it's not 3 diff
tests. Just they do internal when it's
earlier.

Sonagrams are uncofortable but hteir not
that bad. They still might do one later
down the road just to check your cervix
and everything but its a normal prosedure.
The u/s isn't that bad but the gel is
cold and I would definatly fill up your
blatter (nothing worse then a catider).
Anyway gl!! Let us know how many weeks!!

Hi,
ultrasound/ultrasonography/sonography has
all the same meaning – the use of high
frequency sound waves which are emitted
from the ultrasound probe. These sound
waves are absorbed by the tissue under
investigation and reflected back to create
an image.
In the first trimester the practitioner
may use two methods of ultrasound imaging
–
1) trans-abdominal – where the
ultrasound transducer is placed on the
abdomen
2) trans-vaginal ultrasound – where the
ultrasound probe is placed within the
vagina.
Transvaginal scanning can be valuable in
early pregnancy (before 12 weeks), because
the uterus as not yet inclined out of the
pelvis and because the transducer probe is
placed next to the women’s cervix –
and so is closer to the small pregnancy
which produces a more accurate and
detailed image than the trans-abdominal
scan.
Ultrasound is highly accurate in the
detection of pregnancy. However, the
accuracy of the scan can depend on several
factors –
e.G. A very early pregnant it can
sometimes be difficult to visualise
because it is so small – so occasionally
the pregnancy may go undiagnosed. The
baby’s heart beat can also usually be
detected approximately between the 6th to
7th weeks of pregnancy.

Does that mean that if im more than 12
weeks becuz theres a chance I am, that it
would not be a good thing to have the
transvaginal one done???
And u said also that it may not show in
early pregnancy so what if it doesnt and
ive alredy had a blood test+urine test
done. Do u think I should go to my
doctors and ask to be on the prenatal vits
and folic acid becuz I have not even got a
date yet for my scan and blood test is not
til another few weeks so il be leaving the
vits+folic acid til too late won i?

I keep hearing americans here talking
about having to get a prescription for
pre-natal vits and folic acid. Can't you
just buy them in your pharmacy like we do
up here??
There is no harm taking the vitamins and
folic acid.
As for the vag u/s, if your doc thinks you
are further along they will start off with
the belly scan if they don't see anything
they will go vaginally (well that is what
they did for me) and it's not dangerous
when you are further along either.

Hi,
if you are more than 12 weeks pregnant
then the ultrasonographer will probably
not perform a trans-vaginal examination -
it will not be needed because the
pregnancy will be large enough for the
trans-abdominal scan to detect. The
ultrasound examination is highly accurate
and should detect the pregnancy unless
were talking few days to first few weeks
of pregnancy.
I am unsure of the accuracy of other
diagnostic tests (urine and blood) but I
presume that they are testing for the
presence of the same hormone - human
chorionic gonadotropin which is produced
in pregnancy.
Did you have the urine test and the blood
test on the same date? I am unsure also
whether there are any other factors which
can affect the result of these tests, such
as time of day which the tests are
performed - think that hcg in the urine is
highest in the morning, so am unsure as to
whether a urine test performed late in the
day would affect the result.
I think the spinal cord will be developed
by the third month of pregnancy – but
you could maybe go to your gp and say that
you think that you might be about three
months pregnant but you’re unsure you
might be less, so you would like to start
taking folic acid supplements. Your gp
can then advise you which supplements you
should take and the dosage required.
Take care.

Hey. No I didnt have the urine test and
blood test on same day. The urine one is
always best done in the day. I had the
blood test a week after. But im not sure
if im spose to not eat or drink before I
have my next blood test.
And I did sumit realy bad I was on the
multivitamins and magnesium tablets till
my doctor told me that the signs I was
having (spoting and late period) was
probly that I am preg and could be 2/3
months. And on them vitamins it says not
to have if pregnant. I asked my doc about
the folic (not the prenatal vits becuz I
only found out about them when I come on
eya) and my doc said I don't need them
till I kno im pre for sure.

Hiya
i wouldn't worry bout the vaginal scan, I
think they will only do one if they can't
find anything when they do a normal
ultrasound!. I had an ultrasound at 6
weeks + 4days, they easily saw the sac and
the doc saw a heartbeat, even managed to
give me a foto of the scan showing the sac
with a little white blob inside which was
the embryo, so unless your really early,
they should be able find out easily if you
are pregnant or not.
Good luck!!
Keep us informed!!
