An elderley relative who has tremors similar to parkinsons (parkinsons has been elimated) is to undergo a dat scan. She is concerned about the potental downside of the radioactive materials that are injected. Need she be worried?

No, she need not worry about the scan. First of all the injected solouted is completely harmless and has no radioactive materials in it. It is just a die that helps the scanner pick up more detailed imaged of the veins and arteries etc. It is the actual scanner that emits the radio waves through the body. One scan alone will not cause health concerns, however multiple scans slightly increase the risk of other diseases such as cancer due to the build up of waves in the body.

Best regards,

I am sorry to see this mis information, to clarify if anyone else reads this. A DATScan involves the injectin of a low dose radioavtive tracer that crosses the blood brain barrier and located in the frontal lobes of the brain.

The camera picks up the distribution of the tracer within the brain, and produces images based on this.

The radioactive dose to the patient is very small, similar to an X_Ray and mush less than a CT scan.

There is no danger in having this procedure and the radioactive tracer is removed by the body over the following 24hrs.

Hi
My father is going through scans at the minute, as the doctors think that he might have parkinsons disease. He is not having tremors as such , but is jerking , has any other parkinsons sufferer experienced these jerks.
