Right Hip Scope Torn Labrum Posted: 10-04-05 19:23pm
Just wondering if anybody has ever had
their hip scope and if so what kind of
experience did you have??? I am going in
on dec 9th and just wanted a little heads
up as to what to expect. I am 26 years
old and a bit nervous about the operation
and know very little about what it
entails.
Thanks for the advise

Hi. I had a hip scope several years
before my thr. I'll admit, the procedure
was certainly uncomfortable - but I have a
feeling a large part of it was because the
doc was inexperienced. He had to bring
someone in mid-procedure to help him. If
it's at all possible, try to find out who
is doing to procedure (if you don't
already know) and how many scopes he/she
has done.
I was able to see what the doc saw on the
screen, and that part was cool!
It was an outpatient procedure and if
memory serves me correctly, the recovery
time wasn't bad.
Good luck!

Hip Scope to Underdog Posted: 11-14-07 00:43am
Only have a minute but would chat more
later.
I just had a scope Nov5th, Had a Femoral
Impingment (boney area on my hip, he
removed it by shaving it or something
similar. Also had problems with my labrum,
ended up being worn out so they did a
debribement meaning removed it thru some
sort of shaving it down.
The procedure went quite well, leg very
swollen for two days especially around the
knee, I started to evevate it more and
within the 3rd or 4th day it was back to
normal. Not a great amount of pain.
Considing what I had to put up with over
the years I could have got by without
any.
Hard thing is knowing what I can do
strength and stretching wise. Doctor
didn't give me much except for he said I
could get on a bike anytime soon
but take it easy. I was still pretty doped
up when I taked to my doctor last so it
was hard remembering much. Anyways the 1st
2 days biking wouldn't have been possible
because of the swelling. Swelling didn't
cause pain but it scared me a little . Day
4 I went for a 15 minute bike really no
pain went day 5 again and also on day 8
and today day 9.
I've constantly been searching from day 1
after surgery for what I can or should do
and couldn't find anything until day 6 and
those where exercises for a person after
hip replacement. Well I did most and a
few and exspcially one of them I shouldn't
have done and that being a leg raise Not
only was I foolish enough to do it I
probably did 6 or 7 even thou I had pain
from the first one. I really wish I knew
what I can be doing.
I hate sitting around (well sitting is
hard so I hate lying around). Now I know
why they put horse down after a broken
leg.
When I 1st got home after the surgery
(same day) in at 6:30am surgery around 9am
woke up at around 11:30 in recovery room.
Went home around 3pm. That evening I tried
moving it a few movemoents I tried and
then thought well that was stupid but a
few that seemed good where moving my leg
from the toes on the floor lightly back
and forth and in bed trying to do slides
(bring leg from straight position to 45
bent, I did this moving it with my good
leg the same time also move ankle forward
and backwards which I later found out are
called ankle pumps.
Anyways just before I leave, the hardest
thing is using the bathroom sitting on the
john is hard you have to keep your bad leg
out straight to avoid your knee being
higher than your hip, evrytime 4 that my
knee gets higher tha my hip I hear and
feel a little pop or something. twice from
bathroom even when trying to be careful
you forget and twice getting off the coach
while trying to get up without knowing it
bang your in a bad position even when you
treid to avoid it.
Anyways it's 8 days later and things are
going pretty good and my Doctor
had very liitle experience with the Hip
Scopes (new procedure last year in
Canada) but the procedure I feel he has
done a really good job. He's new to Hips
but has been doing shoulders and other
areas for years so he does have alot of
experience using the tools and doing
scopes. PS He actually did my shoulder and
he did a excellent job and having him do
my Hip I felt very comfortable.
But again find out now what exercises you
can start with right away and also get a
attachment for your toilet. People getting
hip replacements have them. Wish I would
have.
Good Luck.

Hip Scope Posted: 11-14-07 07:53am
I had a right hip scope for torn labrum 4
years ago. Unfortunately I found no pain
relief from it. Recovery was not bad - in
fact I got pregnant 2 weeks after surgery
(maybe that is why it didn't work!) My doc
told me to use crutches for a few days -
then I could do whatever I wanted. I spent
one night in the hospital - only because
my surgery was late in the day.
I also have dysplasia - which causes torn
labrums quite often. I am now facing
either replacement/resurface or an
osteotomy (and I am 33). I also most
likely have torn labrums in both hips now.
I have been told that hips scopes on
dysplastic hips are pointless - so if this
is the cause of your torn labrum, you may
want to seek out another opinion. If your
torn labrum was caused by some kind of
injury - I'm sure there is a greater
chance of success.
Good Luck
