birth control & antibiotics Posted: 10-05-05 08:45am
Well, last month I started my first pack
of birth control pills. Two days before
I started taking my pills (when I was on
my period) me and my boyfriend had sex in
a pool but he pulled out. (i am 100%
sure he did). Then, I had a sinus
infection the first week of the pack and
was taking antiobiotics. The questions
is my period was a brownish color this
month and it was very very light. I
think the first day I had to wear a pad
but after that it was very light. It
lasted about three days. But before I
started taking them my period was always
short and light but not brown. I was just
wondering if this is normal for being on
bcp's for the first time? Other things to
consider is that I am on yasmin and I was
affected by hurricane katrina and had to
evacuate, so do you think the stress would
cause that as well?

I'm so sorry you were affected by
katrina...Stress can do weird things to
your cycle, and so can starting the pill.
When you're on the pill, your period isn't
a "real" period. It's what they call a
"pill period." this is because your
uterine lining doesn't build up like it
does when you're not on the pill, so
there's not much tissue to shed. Your
period is actually withdrawal bleeding
from going off the hormones for that week
when you're taking the inactive pills.
So it's probably normal to see a
difference because you're now having a
different type of period than you're used
to.
