Does anyone know if it is normal that your
doctor not check anything at your first
appointment. My first appointment was at
six weeks and he just confirmed I was
pregnant and did a routine exam. He did
not mention a change in my cervix or
uterus and said it would be too early to
notice anything. Is this normal?

Well mine might have been a wee bit
different from the norm. I had already
seen my doc twice for a spotting incident.
Because of that I had two sonograms.
With the second of that appointment they
went ahead and drew the blood for the
blood work.
At my first official appointment the nurse
took my health history. This consisted of
question about myself, any pregnancies,
history of diseases, infections, etc.
They also asked questions about the health
history of the baby's father and his
family.
Then the doc did a pap because it had been
more than 6 months since my last one. She
checked my breast for any lumps, etc.
Much like what happens in your normal
yearly pap smear exam. During this she
also asked me if I would like to have
testing for any std's.
She then did a quick ultrasound just to
ensure the baby has a heartbeat. The
machine was old, so she said the only
thing she could really tell me is that it
has a heartbeat. If I hadn't already have
seen her for the spotting I am quite
certain the blood would have been drawn on
this first official visit as well.
The blood work is to determine your blood
type, and to check for any possible
problems, such as anemia, etc. Early on
if antibodies are found in your blood this
could be a sign of the rh factor and you
would have to get a rhogam (sp?) shot so
that your blood doesn't attack the baby
(basically).
I hope this helps you in some way. Not
all doctors will do all of these things on
the first visit. I know that my next
appointment will be october 28th, when I
will be 14 weeks and 3 days according to
the doc. During this visit I will get
blood drawn again to do what they call the
quad testing. They will test for four
different birth defects, among other
things.

Yes, she asked me. She is a wonderful
doctor. She is either around my age, or
younger than myself (30). She treats me
much like an equal. Not only that, but
she is also expecting her first child this
month.
Even though she asked, I am sure by
routine she would have had my pap results
tested for stds anyway. Maybe if I had
said no she would have went on to explain
that it is a routine test and explain the
importance of getting it done?

You do not have to be tested for all std's
and I believe the requirements may change
from state to state. In ny state, the
only required std testing is for hiv.
So, if her doctor offered to test her for
std's, I am assuming it would be for all
the other std's, which there are many.
As for my first doc appointment, I went in
at 9 weeks. They did nothing but a
papsmear and gave me no information what
so ever. No weight check, no blood
pressure check. My last period had
been abdormal, so I wanted to know if I
was farther along. I made this clear
over the phone, that I would want a
sonogram. When I showed up that
morning for my appointment, they didn't
even have it written down that I was
pregant. They then accused me of not
telling them over the phone that I was
pregnant. After the doctor did the
check up, she looked at her little dial
and said "according to this, if ur last
period was june 30th, your 9 weeks along".
I said, thats great, but my last
period was abdormal, is it possible I am
farther along? She said "yes." and
that was it. Didnt offer to send me
for a sonogram to find out or anything.
So I asked if I could get a sonogram.
She replied with "yes, but you have to
make an appointment at our other office".
Wow, thanks for nothing you idiots.
Why didnt someone say that to me when I
called requesting a sonogram when I made
the appointment? I was very
disappointined and switched doctors.
I had my first doctors appointment on
october 6th with my new doctor and I love
her. I had my weight checked, blood
pressure checked, and we got to hear the
heartbeat on the dopplar thingy. She
sat down with me, went over all my
personal history with me and let me ask
any question I had about pregnancy.
They also gave me a baby goody bag..
About 10 magazines on pregnancy and
babies, and also a sample box of the
ensure mommy snacks. This was just one
doctor in a practice of 5 females.
November 1st I going back for my 2nd
appointment and I have chosen to see the
midwife. My good friend at work sees
her and loves her. I am probably not
going to choose to go with a midwife, but
I figured this is a great oppertunity to
learn the differences between the two.
Also at my next appointment, they will
give me the slip for a sonogram and I will
be able to go find out the sex of the baby
:d

The std testing was for the two most
common ones, chlamydia and ghonorea (sp?).
I was also tested for hiv since when I
had my daughter in 1991 I bled out and had
to have a blood transfusion.

What state are you in?
Your state requirements may be different
than my state requirements. In ny state,
it is manditory to be tested for hiv, but
thats it.
