Atypical Cells In My Pap
Posted: 10-07-05 14:28pm

This is my first pregnancy, and I seem to have so many worries. I am only about two months pregnant. My first prenatal exam was a couple of weeks ago. The results of my pap came back and the doctor called me to tell me that I had "atypical cells" they informed me to not worry, that it is usually nothing at all. They said that there are many factors that could make the cells "atypical" such as sex the day before the exam, or bacteria, or yeast. They told me that they would wait three months and then I would have another pap. By then the body will hopefully balance its self out and nothing will be wrong. I explained to them that I thought three months was a long time to see if I was alright. I have never had an abnormal pap before, and this seemed to alarm me. I spent two nights crying over this, scared that I have contracted some std or have cancer......My aunt had actually had a pap come back with "atypical cells once before, and everything was fine. I had a pap about six to nine months before that one and the results were fine....The nurses say there's nothing to worry about it...How do I calm my nerves? Does anyone have experience with this sort of pap result? With this being my first pregnancy i'm very nervous! :?:

Try not to stress out too much. I had abnormal cell during my pap tests before and they kept on running more and more tests (testing for cervical cancer and it came out alright) then I went back and they told me I had abonormal cells again and so on they have never really told me anything definite.

I am now in my second month of pregnancy and I have been bleeding for practically two months everyday, and nobody can give me answers.

I try to relax and take it easy (i am on bedrest right now) I know it's hard to calm yourself while you don't have any answers but as long as you don't have any bleeding or cramps you have a very high chance of having a healthy baby.

Have faith in the lord and believe everything is going to be ok that is what has kept me going.

I have used a very helpful site allexperts.Com where you can get medical professionals answer your questions by explaining your medical conditions and what the possibilitis are.

Keep strong

Abnormal cells on a pap test are very common. When they are mild, docs usually wait 3-6 months and retest to see if anything has changed. Trust me, if they felt at all that this was urgent, they'd have you in for a biopsy. Just so you know though, abnormal cervical cells are usually caused by the human papilloma virus (hpv). This is the virus that causes warts, but the strains that cause abnormal cells do not cause warts. Up to 80% of sexually active people are infected with this virus, because the virus is smaller than the smallest pores in condoms. Believe me, if the docs were worried, you would definitely know.

Take care,
