Emergency Contraception After Abortion

I had a medical abortion on 09/22/2005. I
was about 3 weeks and 4 days pregnant. On
10/04/2005 I took the emergency
contraception. On october 13 I had what
seemed to be a menstrual cycle. It only
lasted 2 to 3 days. The first day being
heavier. Is this considered a menstrual
cycle? When can I take a pregnancy test
and know for sure that its not giving me a
positive result because of the previous
pregnancy that I terminated.

good for you!
However, it is not the choice or an
available option to everyone. That's why
we now have emergency contraception.
Peace,

Yes it is true. Emergency contraception
is great but not good for continous use.
It was weird because after an abortion I
really dont know when to expect my period.
Doctor said 4 to 6 weeks.
Taking the ecp really threw me off because
the bleeding wasnt as heavy as I expected
so I wasnt sure if it was my period.
Thanks for the clarity.

I took a pregnancy test yesterday the 18th
and it was negative. I will take again on
the 23rd to be on the safe side. If its
negative then I can assume that the
bleeding from the 13th was actually my
period and that I shouldnt have my period
again until november 10.
How does emergency contraception affect
future menstrual cycles?

My normal cycle is 28 days. So I can be
safe to assume (pending negative pregnancy
test on the 23rd) that the bleeding on the
12th was my period. Am I right?

What do you mean having aborted so many
times? I only had one abortion. The
emergency contraception does not abort a
fetus but prevents you from getting
pregnant.

it shouldn't. It may
only affect the period that you are
waiting on when you took it. It's hard
to say because all women are different and
all of us react differently to ec.

You're right, ec does not abort, disrupt,
or dislodge a pregnancy that has already
been established. It only prevents a
pregnancy from occurring.

Thanks. I was a little bit confused. The
worst is the waiting. Hopefully I will
get my next menstrual cycle in the next 3
weeks.

the pharmacy I go to
(it's specifically for students and low
income people) just dropped all birth
control from its distribution lists.
Quite literally, the only thing you can
get there now is tylenol or its generic
equivalent. Since this is the case and
since I cannot afford $30+ for one cycle
of birth control, I am now back to playing
the waiting game every month. We have
always used condoms but now I also use
spermicide with it just to double up.
The waiting was always horrible but now it
is even more horrible because I thought
those days were behind me.

Yes. But you should also try emergency
contraception. Just to be on the safe
side. But not recommended for alot of
use.

I can't afford it right
now and I really don't think I could be
pregnant. My husband was out of town on
business during my "fertile" time (and
when i'm not on the pill I can tell when
that is). I'm not worried about it.
But wait and see, if i'm even one day late
I start to stress about it.
Peace,
jenn

If we could just clarify exactly why birth
control pills work, perhaps we could end
this silly discussion. The premise of
hormonal birth control pills is that they
make your body believe it is already
pregnant. When a woman is pregnant, she
does not release any more eggs. Also,
mucus thickens sp that no other sperm can
get through. The point is that your body
would not want to have two different
pregnancies at different stages going on
at the same time. That is how the pill
works -- if your body thinks it is already
pregnant, it will not allow another egg to
be fertilised and implanted.
If you personally believe that any
fertilised egg constitutes a pregnancy
(whether that is in a dish in the lab or
in your body or flushed down the toilet
because it did not implant), that is your
opinion. Your body, however, says no --
it is not a pregnancy, since it it
refusing to acknowledge it.
