Hi .. I'm having some anxiety. I don't get the heart racing thing or anything like that. It's more like a claustraphobic feeling and just a sense of panick. Last time I ever got that way was a few months after my father passed away. That eventually faded away ( I was taking herbal stuff to help "calm" me and then it went away). But, now i'm 18 weeks pregnant and that same anxiety has returned and it's scary. Is it normal to develop an anxiety problem during pregnancy? How do I get through this feeling and will it subside soon or last the entire time. It brings all these strange thoughts and is really freaking me out. My impulse is that I can't sit still. It's as if when I try to sit still someone is sitting on me and I have to push them off and get out from under it. Is this an anxiety disorder or is it hormones? And why during pregnancy?

You're not alone! I've dealt w/ anxiety, specifically social anxiety for the last 15 years. The deal is to put everything into perspective, not "overthink" and to get help. Anxietyfree is a good non-drug site. Dr. Melvin green's "living fear free" is a great book as well.

You are probably having all these reactions because the hormones. I've noticed they have made me super sensitive, and that could be a reason why. If you have any questions pm me, and i'd be glad to answer.

Here's a tip, when I get really anxious, I go to a "safe place" in my head. I visualize the waves washing in and out at the beach. I also tell myself to "stop" and go do something useful such as laudry, or other chore like cleaning the shower. Support groups are wonderful, look for one locally. Good luck!!

I've had a lot of anxiety since i've had children, because I worry a lot about their future. I can remember the first time this happened to me (panic attack basically). It was when the war started. I had a small baby and another on the way. And I was so worried about all the chemical and nuclear warfare and how you don't know if your neighbor is a terrorist.

Sorry to ramble, but I believe my pregnancy was the onset of my anxiety. I went to my doctor, who prescribed welbutrin. I didn't want to take that though. I have found prayer/meditation has helped me the most in keeping my head clear and calm.
