Discomfort After An Emg (electromyogram) Study Posted: 10-20-05 17:11pm
My mother (who is 73 yrs old) had an emg
two weeks ago. Her neurologist wanted to
study some weakening she is experiencing
in her right leg. Since she had the test
she is complaining of a burning sensation
in her back and extremities and is blaming
the test. Her doctor (and all the
information I have looked) says this is a
very safe and risk free test and there
should be no secondary effects.
Have anyone experience this kind of
discomfort after having an emg?
What can be done to lessen her
discomfort?
Thanks

I had an emg back in december and I had to
take a week off work. I saw my doctor and
my neurologist a couple of days after the
tests as I was in chronic pain. Both said
that my reaction was very unusual. I was
put on a high dose of endep
(amitriptyline) as it helps with nerve
pain (which is possibly the burning
sensation that your mother is getting).
The endep hasn't gotten rid of my original
problem but it did help with calming down
the pain associated with the emg. Maybe
your mother would benefit from this drug
or something similar.
