Help - Just Had Microdiscectomy And Am In Agony Posted: 10-24-05 04:47am
Hi
i live in the uk and have had
microdiscectomy with my private health
insurance. The first week I was fine but
since then I have been in constant pain in
my leg and buttock. I have tried to get
hold of my consultant but am having
difficulty reaching him!
If there is anyone out there who has had
the same procedure can they please let me
know what it was like post operation -
both good and bad stories please but
hopefully some good ones. I need cheering
up at the moment.
Thanks

Elainec100 ~
hi there! I am so sorry to hear you are
in this much pain after your surgery. Did
the mico-d take the pain you had prior to
surgery away for that 1 week? Is the pain
you are having now better or worse then
before your surgery? The reason I ask is
because when I had my first micro-d of the
lumbar spine I was great for 5 years.
Five years later the disc bulged again and
I had to have a second micro-d. The
second one only lasted a little over 2
weeks when the area the surgery was done
on collapsed causing the pain you are
talking about down both of my legs. I
ended up in the hospital for 4 days for
pain control. All but on doctor I saw
while in the hospital said it was my lower
back (lumbar). The monday or tuesday
following my hospital stay I called my ns
(who was out of the country while I was in
the hospital) and he had me go for another
lumbar mri and he found l4-s1 collapsed.
Needless to say I had my first fusion
surgery within a month. This was after
other tests.
I hope you can get a hold of your surgeon
soon. This doesn't sound right that you
are in so much pain.

Im shirl - thanks for your reply.
The pain went completely for the first
week (bliss!). Before the operation I had
a shooting pain down the leg when I got up
from sitting or lying down - a trapped
nerve from a prolapsed disc I think. I
had an mri and this did show a prolapsed
disc.
The trapped nerve pain has still gone and
the pain I have now is a constant ache in
the buttock and calf and numbness in my
foot. I have read some where that this
could also be a prolapsed disc - sounds
like the disc is pushing on the nerve
rather than trapping it?? Don't know if
this is correct.
Anyway I have given up with trying to
contact the surgeon. I have found a pain
management clinic at the same hospital and
have an appointment there in a week's
time. The doctor there looks at
alternative ways to alleviate the pain
rather than surgery.
I don't know if this is the best way to go
just now but I cannot bear the thought of
surgery - particularly with the same
surgeon!
