Pyschological Effects of Coming Off the Pill
Posted: 10-25-05 18:42pm

Hi

i came off the pill ( celest ) in february this year at the time I was unwell but thought my body needed a break from the pill since I had been on it for three years.

Since I have come off it my periods have returned to normal but in the run up to my period i`m like an emotional wreck, I get so teary and so anxious that some days I just feel like crying and staying in bed. I have spoke to my doctor and her solution is to go back on it but I don`t want to.

Has anyone else experienced any of these things and do you know how to ease them?

Thanks

I thought I got bad pms when I was on the pill but when we started trying for a baby the pms doubled it was terrible. My doctor was telling me that the pill generally makes pms alot better for some women (i was obviously one of them) but I did notice that after a few months things seem to ease off a bit hopefully the same works for you. It takes your body a while to adjust to not taking the pill so give it time.

Make sure that all these emotions aren't pregnancy talking! If I were you I wouldn't go back on them. Your body knows best! I was real moody like that after I had my child (it wasn't baby blues), I had it for months and come to find out my estrogen level was to high so I needed to be placed on a low hormone pill. It worked well for me, now I am off the pill and I am fine. It probably is from the sudden change of your hormone level that is driving you insane. Give it a few months and it should be better. If not ask about a low hormone pill and then get off of that. That way your body doesn't have such a dramatic drop in hormone. Good luck and I hope you start feeling better soon.

Thanks very much for your replies, did it take you long for your hormones to stabilise?

I really don`t want to go back on the pill but I just feel like I can`t go on acting like an emotional wreck. It gets me so down I could just cry all day every day for two weeks solid!

Thanks again

It took me about 6 months to get my hormones right, but I then got on birth control, so with out them I could still being going insane right now.

I too just came off the pill-i've been off a month. I've noticed that everything anyone does to me I over-react and cry. Please let me know how long it takes you to get back to normal. I can't go back on the pill for health reasons, but mentally, i'm so much worse off, I think i'd rather forgo my health concerns and worry about my mental state.

However, it is a comfort just knowing that this is normal. For weeks, i've been thinking I was going crazy.

Hi jo

well if your crazy then so am i, well it feels this way. I`ve had a particularly bad month this month, been so moody and teary for weeks now, I can`t be bothered with anyone and I feel so anxious. It`s really horrific, i`ve never had any of these symptoms when I was on the pill, ever!

I`m going to go see my doctor again but I know she`ll just tell me to go back on the pill again but if this doesn`t settle down soon I don`t know what other option I have.

Let me know how you get on
