Can You Become Un-allergic? Posted: 11-01-05 15:52pm
When I was a child, I was not allergic to
shellfish...Ate shrimp all the time. I
stopped eating seafood altogether from
like 14-18. Then one day I decided to
have shrimp....I had like 5 or 6 of them.
That night I broke into hives and my
right eye swelled shut.
I am 25 now and have not had shellfish on
purpose since. I have had a bite or two
of a piece of shrimp by accident on a
couple of occasions, and nothing
happened.
Is there any safe way to tell if I have
become un-allergic?

It's actually more likely that you would
have an more severe reaction if you tried
it again, from what I understand how
allergies work. As a child, your immune
system was not fully developed, so maybe
that is why you didn't have a reaction.
But then when you had the shrimp, your
body recognised it and produced a
reaction. That's how it apparently works
with wasp stings -- no reaction the first
time, allergic reaction the second time,
and the third time it's into anaphylactic
shock.
If you went to an allergist, they would
probably be able to test you.
