Very Scared With First Seizure
Posted: 11-02-05 02:07am

The other night at work (funny enough I work at a hosptial) I had my first seizure and I am just scared and wondering if that is what it really was. I am awaiting an appointment with a neurologist.

So here is what happened: I was feeling dizzy, and as I was walking down the corridor I was losing my balance and running into the wall. I sat down and continued to feel very dizzy for another 10 minutes, at which time I was overcome by this immense feeling of weakness, I collapsed over my desk as I called out for help. I was hyperventilating and was still conscious as nurses came to tend to me. They wanted me to move to the floor. Every time I would raise my head off my desk, and an immediate sense of dread and doom would overcome me. But I was too weak to speak to tell them not to make me lift my head. Next thing I know I am on the floor and feel my right arm jerking, but no control over it.

Apparently I stopped breathing and a 'code blue' was called and the icu team came up to see me. I don't remember stopping breathing. Next thing I remember there is a doctor there and everyone from the icu team. The doctor is asking me what is going on. I quietly mutter "just weak" with hardly enough energy to form the words. My eyes then start to flutter but I have no control over them, I then feel my right arm shaking again as well as my left leg. It soon transfers over to my left side and my left arm is now shaking too. I am feeling so panicked and scared by now that I start moaning. Next thing I know I am waking up in the er department just shivering.

Apparently those who saw it said that this episode lasted 30 minutes from the time I collapsed until they gave me versed (a sedative), after I started moaning and panicking. In my mind I was conscious for it all and it lasted 5 minutes. Apparently I was told that I was in and out of consciousness for it all, and they kept having to do sternal rubs on me to get me to respond.

I had a ct to rule out a stroke or other masses and an eeg which the technician said looked normal. My gp banned me from driving until I see a neurologist, to which I am on a month long wait list.

Does this sound like a seizure to those who have had one. It was so weird because I felt so aware of what was going on but couldn't control any of it and was just profoundly weak. If not a seizure, perhaps a tia? I would immensely appreciate any insights into what may have happened.

It does sound like a possible seizure. Step one, wait for the neuro to tell you about the eeg. Techs are good, but they are not board certified to read them....There are neuros who do not do a good job with reading so I really would not take the word of a tech....

It is possible to have seizures and have a normal eeg, just as an abnormal does not mean you will have them....

Any one, at any time can have a one time seizure. As many as 1 in 20 will have one! One seizure does not mean it will continue...

I know it is so hard to wait for the neuro apt. Not driving does sound wise until you have more answers. Your sounds like a really long one, but you have good eye witness testimony of what went on. Do you have all that in writing? The neuro will need to know all those details....

I wish you well and hope you have no more!
