Should I Be Evaluated For Dvt?
Posted: 11-07-05 22:07pm

I went on my honeymoon (10 hr flight) a little over one month ago. Upon arriving at our destination, I had a mild pain behind my left knee, but nothing really serious. Since then, the pain behind my knee has continued on and off throughout the month. This weekend, the pain definitely progressed so I have been examining the painful area. I definitely have superficial veins that are visible, though I do not yet have any varicose veins. I am 25 yrs old, female, and in decent shape. I do not have any other risk factors for dvt besides the long flight. But the pain has become quite persistent, right behind my knee, and it's definitely a very deep pain. Should I make an appointment to see my doctor to have an ultra sound done of the painful area? Or is it rediculous to think that a 25 year old, otherwise healthy woman would have dvt. I don't want to be a hypochondriac, but I also don't want to suffer a pe! Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm probably not the best person to answer this but I believe dvt
can occur at any age so I guess it's worth getting checked out just in case...

Hi,

as I understand it, the incidence of dvt amongst air travellers is very small. It would have to be when you consider the vast numbers of people on long haul flights on any given day. I also understand that dvt is most prevalent in those over 40 years of age, and also when there are other contributary factors such as smoking, etc.
It has not been definitively agreed that dvt is caused by long haul travel, it may merely be exacerbated in those who are already predisposed to dvt.
But nevertheless if you are concerned then get it checked out. It's always better to be safe than sorry. But I would say that chances are you aren't suffering from dvt.
If it's any reassurance, I have flown on over 40 long haul flights and have never suffered a problem.
Take care... :-)
