Someone Help Me?
Posted: 11-08-05 13:30pm

Hi. I am new here, so I am sorry if my problem is obvious but I do not know about it. My period has been late for a week, it has been somewhat unstable these past months. My fiance and I did have unprotected sex two weeks ago... If I start using birth control pills now, will it ensure I won't be pregnant? I have not used birth control pills before, should I start?!

Birth control won't stop pregnancy - it's meant to be taken to prevent pregnancy, not stop it once it begins. Birth control isn't dangerous to a fetus, but you're still advised to stop it if you get pregnant because it's hoenstly pointless to try to pretect yourself from pregnancy when it's already happened.

Your best bet would have been emergency contraception, which would have needed to be taken 72 hours following unprotected sex, so you're kinda screwed for that. All you can do now is take a pregnancy test, which you can do without problems because you've missed your period. No matter what result you get, call a doctor and find out when is the earliest time you can get a blood test done (earliest based on when you had sex) to confirm whether of not you're pregnant.

If you're pregnant, you'll need to begin considering all your options and decide what you want to do about your child. If you aren't pregnant, do take this as a lesson and utilize some kind of contraception; aside from absitnance, spermicidal condoms and birth control paired together is your next best bet.

Sorry if I was harsh...
