Hi, I have the same symptoms. I am only 24 and i am pretty sure I dont have heart disease, but just because of the chest pain i get from anxiety, I recently started panicking that I may be having a heart attack or some problem with my heart. Originally it was just chest pain. Then I looked up heart attack on the web, and I think that the knowledge of left arm pain psychologically brought it on as a symptom. If you look into panic attacks/disorders, one of the major symptoms is thinking one is having a heart attack, to the point of the person going to the er. It is quite common. So far i have had and EKG which came out normal. I think if you have had all the necessary tests done to rule out any real heart disease, even if it means having second or third opinions so you can really sleep at night, you need to seek new anxiety/panic treatments until you find something that works for you. You might want to look into interoceptive desensitization. It does not sound like a fun treatment, but to me it sounds like the most effective treatment out there, because your psychiatric professional basically induces a series of attacks on you, thus teaching you that the symptoms you frequently feel are nothing serious, and you survive, etc. I have read that this is very effective, and often cures the patient. The problem is that people who suffer from this, myself included, think that the anxiety always comes from some specific source, like remembering a traumatic event, or feeling a physical symptom like chest pain and thinking they will die, or whatever. But I have recently discovered that a lot of those symptoms eventually start to just come on their own, even if I am out at a party with friends, feel perfectly fine, have not been thinking about the stress in my life, or my anxiety, have no symptoms of anything, and out of nowhere, boom, a symptom for no reason. I think that when the disorder is in developing stages, you are more likely to have what seems like a clear reason to have an attack. But over time of not having it treated properly, I think symptoms like left arm pain, along with any number of other possible symptoms, just recurr on their own because of the subconscious fear that you have developed and that has been associated with your fear in general. I myself know at this point that I need professional help. I was just on the wikipedia.org site titled panic attack (please read it) and between physical, mental, and emotional symptoms listed, I had about 21 symptoms that I experience in any given week. I think there are tons of people out there with this problem, who are constantly trying to diagnose problems, and they (actually we) need to focus on being treated for anxiety/panic disorders. Hope this is helpful. http://en.wikipedia.or g/wiki/Panic_attack

I also want to add that I was not a teenager long ago, and I remember the feeling of not wanting to go to the doctor again and again because they will think Im crazy, stupid, etc. I learned to get over that because the most important thing to you and your family is your health, both mental and physical. You and your family should be able to rest assured that you are safe, and can be cured of any problem you may have. I am almost positive based on what you wrote, and the fact that I can relate, that you simply have an anxiety/panic disorder. All of your symptoms are common anxiety and panic related symptoms. See http://en.wikipedia.or g/wiki/Panic_attack for a list of symptoms, and lots of helpful info. Please don't let fear of embarrassment prevent you from seeing your doctor or pyschiatric professional. This is your life, you want to live it well, and happily. Go get treated. I have found in my past experience that when we are willing to let down the walls and admit to our friends and family that we are in need, it usually brings everyone closer together. Even if you are embarrassed for a time, it is more worth it to be able to live your life without any extra stress. Being your age is hard. I know it. It should not have to be any harder with added stress and anxiety. I am worried that you wont do what you need to do, because when I was 16 I was exactly the same way. But in the end, there is no excuse for not going to get help if you think you need it. Think of yourself, and your family, and how it will help you, and dont think of anything else.

After reading all of the posts above, I've started to feel a little better. I'm a 32 year-old female and have been stressed out for a long time. Besides being raised by a mom that worried all the time, I too, have worried about everything there is to worry about. I've tried to conquer it on my own, but lately it seems too overwhelming. I've talked to the doctor about taking anxiety medication. She prescribed me Effexor XR, but I felt really weak after the first dose and my heart started to race. It felt as if me heart was going to beat right out of my chest. The day after I took the first dose, I started to feel better, but still jittery. Does anyone recommend a more calming anxiety medication? Also- does anyone know anything about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fybromylgia? A lot of these stress symptoms seem to be listed under these illnesses, as well. I am just ready to feel better and don't know what to do. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

Left Arm Pain:

It has been very strange for me as well. I have been getting pains in m left arm, but I haven't experienced any other symptoms that may detect that it would be something more serious. I don't smoke and I would have a drink a week at the most. Would any of you know the answer. Thanks

For me, Zoloft and Paxil CR were a lot better than Effexor XR. I think Zoloft has the fewest side effects. I have noticed that when I look at the side effects they seem to "appear," so my suggestion is to not look at the side effects until you have been taking the meds for about 3 weeks. Your doctor or pharmacy will tell you if there are any dangerous side effects. I am not saying that you would do the same as me, just a suggestion. Smile HTH!

pains and anxiety
Posted: 02-19-08 13:49pm

I hear ya. I was 20 and I had chest pains, dizziness, nausea, arm pains and muscle spasms. Went to the ER countless times and was told I was fine and sent home. They told me it was anxiety but I wasnt convinced so I went to see a cardiologist and he did an echo and found out I had mitral valve prolpase. It turns out some of my sympoms were from that and people who have it are very prone to panic attacks. So I was put on a beta blocker, metroprolol and zoloft and alprazolam and it seems to have helped. Just posting this for any of you who even when you take your anxiety meds and it doesnt go away, you may have mitral valve prolapse, its hard to catch on an ekg and its not really life threatening just makes your life hell because of the symptoms.

Im your age AND get the same thing!
Posted: 03-06-08 18:19pm

im your age to and get the exact same thing wen im stress or just have a lot of things going through my mind... then i start feeling that arm pain which isnt like omg owww!! But enough to scare u right it has to be anxiety tho because wen u start feeling that it gets u scared like your having some sort of heart probelms.. well people with anxiety have all different sorts of aches and pains and the majority of the think that they r having a heart attack or some sort of problem which they are not
having the fear of having a heart attack or even dying is a symptom of anxiety

hmmm... i do occasionally suffer symptoms like these and i have been on/off various treatments for anxiety for years... i found that i hated taking the medications (ie. zoloft, paxil, wellbutrin, xanax, etc) but they did help the side effects of the anxiety... they however, did not fix the underlying problem at all...as crazy as it sounds, i found that getting off junk food, exercise, chiropractic, and meditation helped to reach the underlying problem... while i still have panic/anxiety issues, they no longer take control of my life, and i have been off of them for 4-5 years now...

as far as pains and various worries about ill health go (including heart, breathing and various pains), i consider seeing how you feel and think throughout the day... do the symptoms follow your emotions??? do they get worse when you worry?? chances are they are in you head... i hate to admit it, but if i have a few drinks, start to relax and whatever it is that i was worried about all day dissolves, then im pretty sure it was only anxiety...

i really hope all of you know you can be better... there is hope, and you can regain control of your thoughts if you really want to... heck, just google 'control thoughts' and im sure some exercises would come up you could try!

and btw, how you feel has very little to do with how healthy you actually are... plenty of anxious and worried people that feel bad are very healthy, and many who feel fine will die of a heart attack tomorrow...

hey stormon...
be sure to check you breathing, body tension and mindset when having a panic attack. Try to look at yourself like you are seeing someone else through a 2 way mirror or something. Get outside yourself, in other words... Then you can begin to see things how they really are. During panic attacks, are you breathing? tense? cold? hot? Where do you turn blue?

take note of things, find the consistencies...

and btw.. dont ever give up hope... its people like you and me that beat things like anxiety that are the most appreciative and helpful in the world once they learn to let go and not live for themselves...

2 other things i recommend... service and gratitude..

hope this helps

im sorry to hear all that, but it is not out of the realm of panic attacks to cause skin color changes, give feelings of confusion/head ache, or hot and cold flashes. What i have noticed (and a study i read out of harvard medical) is that panic attacks seem to make our 'weak' spots weaker. In other words, when there is a small problem, or something we are not visibly or consciously aware of, stress can in fact bring them to the surface. What your job will have to be is to decide if these problems are stress/panic related and then try to find if it is a chemical, emotional, or mechanical issue. There would be 1000 other questions to ask before we could know is what im saying is even close to true for you, but these were all things that helped me along the way. Like i said, i also had some help from a few medications to help ground me in the beginning of this wicked journey. You might want to try some of them orfind a holistic health practitioner in your area (ie. chiropractor, accupuncture, etc) to reduce the stress on your body. These are all choices we must make for ourselves, but just letting you know people have been through this and your aren't insane.... hearing that can go a long way for some people too! keep at it, and i still recommend service (ie. volunteer work) to help as well...

hope this helps...

WELL I JUST WANTED TO POST A COMMENT ON THIS TOPIC SINCE IT AFFECTS SO MANY PEOPLE. THERES A SAYING THAT STRESS COME FROM QUESTIONS WITH NO ANSWERS, WHEN YOU CANT FIGURE SOMETHING OUT, IT THEN BECOMES A FEAR YOU CANNOT CONTROL, UNLESS YOU CONVINCE YOURSELF THAT FEAR STANDS FOR FAKE
EMOTIONS
APPERIARING
REAL

THERES ABSOLUTETLY NOTHING WRONG WITH GETTTING STRESSED OUT, JUST DONT PANIC AND KNOW THAT WE ARE HUMAN AND THE BODY NEEDS TO DO WHAT IT HAS TO DO TO LET US KNOW THAT IT FEELS EXAUSTED WILL POST MORE SOON

NOT ALONE!!!
Posted: 07-01-08 05:15am

PANICKIE HAS BEEN A GREAT HELP IN THIS TOPIC, WE ALL SHARE THE SAME SYMPTOMS AND SHOULD KNOW THAT SOME OF OUR STRESS AND OUR PANIC ATTACKS ARE MORE ADVANCE THAN OTHERS BUT YOU ARE NOT ALONE AND THEIR IS BETTER DAYS AHEAD. IF YOU HAVE HAD ALL KINDS OF TEST DONE AND EVERYTHING IS NORMAL YOU SHOULD TRY TO EXERCISE AND KEEP YOUR SELF ESTEEM HIGH. IF YOU HAVE NOT HAD AND EKG OR HEART ULTRASOUND DONE GET IT DONE JUST SO YOU CAN HAVE PEACE OF MIND. I THINK THE FEAR OF DYING YOUNG HAS ALOT OF US REALLY PANIC , BUT ALOT OF THIS STRESS CAME TO ME AS SOON AS I REALIZE I WAS AN ADULT AND UNDERSTOOD LIFE AND THE WAY THINGS ARE WHEN IT COME TO OUR HEALTH. WELL I WISH EVERYONE THE BEST AND REMEMBER TO RELAX YOUR NERVES AND THINK HAPPY THOUGHTS
