Advice About Iui Please...
Posted: 11-13-05 19:03pm

My gyn says I have 2 more cycles on clomid before he wants us to have an iui. I am hoping of course to be pregnant before then, but I have learned not to hope for that. I want to know if anyone has gotten preg with an iui, and anything else about the procedure they can tell me. Thanks so much, good luck ladies...Baby dust all around

Hi--just had my first cycle of iui and am awaiting the results (next week). I have two friends who were both pregnant with their first cycle of iui. I had to have the procedure due to hostile cervical mucus. Are you taking something while on the clomid to help thin your cervical mucus? Clomid has the nasty side effect of thickening normally receptive mucus. Success with iui (take home baby rate) is around 10-20% if done for the proper indications. I know how tough it is to be patient--i am going absolutely crazy waiting. Hopefully you will get pregnant on your own, but the iui was absolutely no big deal, and most women are pregnant within 3 cycles. Make sure your doc offers ultrasound day 12-13 to track follicle development, and an hcg shot--this combo offers the best chances for success. Good luck!!!

Iui

Hi, I saw that you are having questions regarding iui. I have a friend who went through this procedure. She had a choice of clomid or gonal f. She did the gonal f with lupron and was successful on the second try. They had twins. You may want to consult your doctor about trying the alternative. Although with gonal f, you can have hypersensitivity and mass produce eggs. This will alter your cycle and you will have to wait for the next one. Although, in my case, I did ivf with the lupron, gonal f, and pregnal, and conceived a year ago. Now we are doing our next cycle.

You also want to make sure your doctor follows you with ultrasounds. I recommed going to a fertility specialist no an ob/ gyn that claims to be a "specialist". You want to utilize someone who does nothing but fertility and you want to know his success rate. Rest a sure, it does not always work the first time.

Good luck, hope this helps.

We have been doing iui with donor frozen sperm, know that fresh is always best but when your only choice is frozen go for it. It's safer health wise. Ok beyond that. Here is my story with iui...

October 2004 lap-n-zap mild endo. And 6 months of lupron injections for endo treatment.

May 2005 first attempt at iui. Clomid days 5-9 pergonal day 10, 150ml, then followed every other day for 2 weeks follical development was 15mm. Need to get to 19mm at minimum. Induced period

june 2005 second attempt same meds same timing. 2 weeks later 12mm folicals. Induced period

july 2005 third attempt blood levels are ok same clomid and injections again, week one every other day week two every day. 11mm folicals.

Each time they stalled out and stopped growing. Did have about 10-15 folicals none were dominate.

Waited it out devistated and october 2005 was my next period never induced flo after third attempt. Was more than happy to not have it. November 25th I waited a minute too long and got a slight + oh the lh test. Ultra sound said 19mm folical, I believe it to have been a false + lh surge. Did insemination on the 26th in the am. Failed

waited again. Christmas loan from mom to help buy more vials of dna. Bought three $500, includes shipping.

Next try was on april 2006 did clomid 50mg two pills days 6-10. Ultrasound day 18 just before the weekend. Knew something was going on. Folical 20mm took hcg 10,000 units. Inseminated april 15th. Negative results last sunday.

This is our third try and first back to back try. Doing clomid again days 6-10 and wait for lh or ultrasound the 18th day. Cycles are 35 days long for me.

We have two vials left and only a 15% chance with each if everything is perfect.

More meds in this case would not work. I asked. More eggs doesn't mean more of a chance as the dominate folical is what bursts the others reabsorb and are wasted if you have a limited supply.

We are using a proven donor who has had a pregnancy result from the use of the frozen sperm. Gives us in our thoughts the best chance. Hope this helps.

It sounds to me that the method is not working for you. I really suggest utilizing a fertility specialist with a proven tract record. If you are in the california area, I recommend Dr. Synn at womens specialty and fertility center. Hes the best in the valley. Very high success rate. Gonal f is the other alternative to clomid. It is extremely more expensive but you can usually find it on www.Freegaragesale.Com and click on medical. Loads of fertility meds are sold by individuals like you and me with leftovers, unsuccessful procedures, and such and a reduced cost.

Clomid doesnt always work. But it sounds if your physician should be watching you every week with ultrasound to follow follicle process not blood or urine testing. If he isnt, than this could be the reason that your follicle production is resulting in a period because it went to long between checks. It is the method most recommended by my physician for the most accurate treatment.

My main experience is with ivf frozen and fresh. I do know with iui, you should be on lupron first with each cycle to shrink the lining to prepare it for cycle. You might want to research further regarding gonal f 1200 iu multidose as an alternative with lupron.

Clomid doesnt always work for everyone. You may have to look at other alternatives such as ivf, alternative meds, or different fertility methods.

I hope the best for you and wish you all the luck. I just really feel with all the new meds and protocols, you may be more successful with a protocol like mine. We started lupron, introduced gonal f with ultrasound checks weekly, then hcg injection 5 days before implantation/ retrieval. Two weeks later hcg urine test. It was the most successful method for myself and my friend who did the iui. Frozen sperm is not the problem, I understand that it doesnt effect the sperm as it does with embryos frozen.

I really hope this helps. I am truly sorry you received a negative result. I can very much empathize with you. We had a negative result after our ivf frozen attempt in march. We are hoping to do another fresh ivf later this year. But finances are our hold up. I am just not sure if I want to financially burden myself again.

Good luck!! Kudos to you and yours!!!

The first three cycles we did were done with ultrasounds everyother day for two weeks. But still stalled out even given more and more drugs.

These past two cycles have been a wonderment as yes I created a mature folical. I am guesssing the first iui failed from not ovulating. Did hcg this last cycle on day 18 I think after I went in for folical check which was mature. Got home and injected.

This cycle is going to go like the last. And I have added on my own a baby asprin to help the lining.

All of my blood work has worked out as within margins so what ever is going on is going on inside.

I would love to move onto ivf but the costs are too much for us. For the iui its $43 for the scans and $165 for the iui even on the weekends. We are in small town wisconisn traveling 75 minutes to a specilist. Doesn't help at this point to go in and have his nurse there as she has a blooming belly that I dream of having.

I have even considered using a surrogate but the laws in wisconsin are for the woman that carries the baby to turm and the father. We had prior tried to adopt through the state but got a social worker that refused to continue with the homestudy unless we got rid of the dogs, as she was uneasy near dogs. And when we ask to talk to higher ups they just state that we are not foster parent material. And hang up on us.
