I had a sinus infection at the end of
september......It was different than I
usually experience b/c it felt like strep
throat! I was treated w/ an
anti-biotic, then steriod pack........It
took about 10 days for my throat to feel
better. Almost instantly my ears became
clogged and I also have post-nasal drip.
I went back to the Dr., took a sinus
x-ray which still revealed some
infection....Took another anti-biotic.
During this time, I had a couple of trips
planned which led to several plane
rides....I'm sure that didn't help.
I've since visited an ent, done a ct of my
sinuses, only to reveal no infection.
The only thing he could see was enlarged
nasal tissues!! Everthing that I have
been reading says that even after the
infection is gone, inflammation can
linger...Leading to my clogged ears and
post nasal drip. Why it's still going
on is beyond me!!!!!!!!!!!!! And, it's
really driving me insane!
I'm wondering why this inflammation is not
going away?? The ent suggested that
surgery to reduce my nasal turbinates
could help.......Surely I don't need
surgery after having a sinus
infection???????
I'm confused!!
Can anyone offer any suggestions or has
anyone ever experienced lingering effects
such as these??
Thanks!

I am going through the same symptoms and I
have seen an ent doctors which has now
prescribed me a course of cortison based
medicines to help reduce the swelling of
my nose passage. At the end of this
course he' ll consider to operate the
turbinates.
I researched the turbinates operation and
found out that can also be done by
laser.
Wish you all the best and hope you find
relief.

Hi emma,
thanks for the reply. I'm sorry to hear
that you are going through this too. Is
your medication helping at all? Do you
have any other symptoms than just your
ears being clogged and did this occur
after a cold or infection?
My biggest symptoms are these: clogged
ears, post nasal drip, dry and/or raw
feeling way back behind my nose and high
in the throat. I'm thinking that all
this extra mucus is clogging the
eustachian tube....But what is causing all
the extra drainage?? My ct scan showed
swollen nasal tissue (which the Dr.
Called congestion), but I don't have any
problems with stuffy nose or breathing.
I just made an appt with an ear doctor for
thursday morning. They had to "squeeze"
me in......Hope I get more than 5 minutes
with the doc.
Let me know what's going on with you, and
if your meds are helping.
Thanks!

Clogged Ears! Help!! Posted: 11-28-05 14:49pm
Hi amy,
these days I am feeling very annoyed and
down.
I have the post nasal drip, dry and
burning feeling behind my nose, dry
throat, stuffy nose/throat, loads of thick
phlem, stuffy nose, can t breath very
well, plus have preassure in the frontal
part of my forehead that causes me a bit
of headache from time to time.
The xray I had done showed that I had
there is preassure on my forehead caused
by the thickening of the mucoses.
These days I have a very blocked nose, and
I am forcing the phlem out by blowing it
very strongly ( I know I shouldn t do it
but I cannot help myself!).
I have now done 10 days with a nasal spray
and some cortison tablets, tomorrow I am
starting the 40 days course of cortison
injections.. I need to do 3 every 20
days.
For the dryiness of the nose and throat I
was prescribed a natural spray made of
seaweed and some nasal drop made of
glicerine and menthol.. The glicerine
drops I found them are good to keep the
mucoses moisturised.
I read that all the extra phlem created is
due to the enlarged glands that produce
more.
By the way I went to an italian ear nose
and throat doctor who visited me with a
telescopic camera (don t know what is
called) by putting it into my nose, throat
and ears.
Let me know how your visit goes.
Take care
emma

Hi emma,
are you feeling any better? How long
have you been feeling this way?
I saw an ear doc on thursday. He said
that I most likely have patulous
eustachian tube.....Meaning my et stays
open and the air is not equalizing
properly. But, he said my ear exam was
normal and that there is no damage to my
ears. His "prescription" was to give it
more time...It may just go away on it's
own. If it doesn't, he said we could put
tubes in my ears....About a 5 minute
procedure per ear. I even asked about
steriod or anti-inflammatory treatment and
he said he didn't think that's what I
needed.
I sort of think that this et diagnosis
might be a secondary cause to what's going
on.....The post nasal drip and feeling in
my throat is still unexplained?? He did
say that my turbinates look fine (ent doc
had mentioned surgery). It's so hard to
believe these doctors when they all say
something different!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me know how you are feeling.

Re: Clogged Ears!! Help! Posted: 12-30-05 14:53pm
Dear piper & others,
i have had deviated septum problems and
even though I had surgery I still have
alot of swelling, dripping, sneezing, and
fullness in my head. The sinus troubles
seem to cause pressure and clogged ears.
I refuse to take steroids of any kind any
more because they can do a number on my
immune system making my condition
worse...And the effect doesn't last for
me...The problems always come back. I do
allergy shots every week which keeps the
"histamine" reaction from happening, but
if I let it go too long than all the
symptoms return. I can even experience
dizziness from all of this...
But anyway getting back to you about the
specific swelling in the nose and
ear.....I would go with some powerful
antioxidants that will minimize the
swelling and dry up the fluids and also
protecting you from further infections.
I know of a great formula that contains
grapeseed extract with a vitamin-c, is
very safe and pure to take, and has
results I have never seen before this.
But, I would also think about your
"triggers" in your environment and foods.
Preservatives can cause huge problems.
Think about it...If we keep on being
exposed to these things and keep on eating
these things what is it doing to our
immune systems? And, how can it really
be eliminated?
Feel free to email me at anytime and I can
send you some info if you like.
Be well,
denise

Clogged Ears!! Help! Posted: 03-19-06 14:16pm
Hi all,
i'm sorry for the delay in replying....I
have let my busy days get in the way of
correspondence. I do appreciate those
responses to my posting.
I wanted to give an update to my
situation, but before I do, I need to jump
back in history a bit....About 10 years
ago, I experienced some dizziness for a
period of 3 months. I was treated
several times for sinus infection and all
the symptoms & dizziness finally went
away.
3 years ago, I had a bad cold and
experienced dizziness shortly after, which
went on for almost a year. I had an mri,
catscans, ear tests, etc....All to which
were normal (thank goodness), but I still
felt bad. After many many visits to
different doctors (almost all dr's gave a
different diagnosis), the final diagnosis
was that I had vestibular neuritis (damage
to the vestibular nerve). It did get
"better", but bothered me off and on. I
started taking a daily decongestant and
nasal sprays, which offered help and
almost all of 2005 I was dizzy free. For
me dizziness is in the form of
off-balanceness. I do not feel steady.
It's very uncomfortable.
This brings me up-to-date, to last
october, when I had an infection that as
soon as it cleared up led to the popping
ears that I originally posted about. The
reason I tell you of my history is because
starting in mid- december, I started to
experience my dizziness again. I figured
it was due to the ear problems.
I have since visited a new ent doctor, who
listed to all my history. He does not
feel that I have vestibular neuritis. He
said vn is associated w/ vertigo. I felt
at a loss. I just cry b/c I feel dr's
either don't have enough experience with
my problem, or are just too busy to spend
the time digging further. He thinks my
popping ears and dizziness are due to
eustachian tube problems. He offered
nothing new for me to try and/or other
treatments.
The pressure in my ears was really bad in
late 2005 and has since improved. I also
don't have daily ears popping any more,
but I definitely have periodic problems.
I still have post nasal drip and
headaches.
Ok...Sorry to write a book, but I would
really like to hear back from anyone who
has, or is experiencing similar problems.
Any thoughts, advice, any treaments,
anything??? I think dizziness affects so
many people, for so many different
reasons. I feel like I don't have many
other choices than to try and help
myself...
Thanks,
amy

Clogged Ears Posted: 05-07-06 02:14am
I am almost over my clogged ears. My
doctor prescribed amoxicillin for the
infection, but that did not help clear up
the fluid. I was also told it would
clear up in three days, and my doctor did
not take it very seriously. Well,
what a pain it is to have clogged ears.
I guess my doctor never experienced it,
else she would have been more
sympathetic.
After about two weeks of clogged ears
(fluid in the ears, not wax), I finally
did something that helped. This was
to blow my nose, one nostril at a time.
The trick was to plug up one nostril,
and then go at it by blowing hard out the
unplugged nostril. It was loud, and I
probably woke up my neighbors, but it did
help a lot. I had to do this about
five or six times for two days, and now my
ears are pretty much good. I still
have more popping than normal, but I can
hear!
One thing about the amoxicillin. I
first had to take this about eight months
ago due to an infection I got while
swimming in the ocean. I did not
listen to the doctor about finishing all
the medicine. After taking the amox
for a few days, my infection seemed better
and I did not bother to finish it.
I now found out that it is important to
take all the amoxicillin as prescribed.
If not, your body could build up an
immunity to the amox. This may have
been why I got the second infection,
because I never used to have problems with
my ears before. So hopefully by
taking all of the amox I have killed any
lingering infections.

I constantly have crackling noises in my
ear and I just figured this was normal.
Anyway to my relevent story, I had clogged
head, blocked sinuses, couldn't breathe
through my nose and I kept getting head
colds and viruses. I was put on
anit-biotics, nasal sprays, then a
ridculous amount of cortisone tablets
until finally a doctor said...Enough! I
was finally referred to an ear nose and
throat specialist who seemed drunk. He
said they were going to remove my adnoids,
which didn't make any sense to me, then I
made the ent doctor look at a ct scan and
it showed I had a growth in my sinuses. I
went into hospital and found out I had a
massive polyp growing in my sinuses and
into my nasal cavity. Ewww. It was due
to an alergy to mold and they can't help
it ever growing back but they could try
and contain it with a steroid spray. So
long story short, have they checked for
hiding polyps?

Also have you tried ear candles to remove
wax safely. As long as you don't have an
ear ache you can use them anytime. They
are quite novel and you can cut them open
afterwards and look at the grossness that
was in your ear. Just google it or ask
your health food store.

Clogged Ear Posted: 01-14-08 02:40am
hi>i read all of the previous msgs and
thought someone can help me. I had a trip
recently where i had to take two flights.
Half way through my second flight i got
severe pain in my left ear and it kept on
getting worse. I felt like someone is
stabing me in the ear. It was so painfull
beyound any pain i have ever had in my
life. I was suffering for an hour before
the plane finally landed. When i got off
the plane the pain was almost gone but my
left ear was clogged and i could not hear
with it anymore. It felt like it was still
pressurized. Due to the fact that i have
been flying since i was a baby i knew
something was wrong because it does not
hurt like as it did on the plane. However
i thought my ear will unclog eventually
within the nest hour or so. Now its been 6
days and my ear is still clogged>i am
depressed, panicing, nervous, afraid and
very aggitated. It does not take a lot for
me to snap at anyone. I feel like i can
not live like this anymore. My ear is
constantly pressurized and feels like i
have fluid in it. I am an athletic guy so
i play sports all the time but now i cant
leave my house. If something falls on the
floor i need someone to pick it up for me
because if i do i feel more pressure in my
ear.I tried all the ticks noting seems to
work. I tried 2 different antibiotics
starting with amoxicillin and a strong
anitcongestant for the past 5 days but its
not working. I need help please please
some one help me

Hi,
Just read your post. You are not alone.
I am also going nuts. Had a cough and
semi cold on and off since Nov. It went
away for a couple of weeks and came back
mid dec. Went out of town for holidays,
developed laryngitis and just crappy
feeling. Not congested but still dry
coughing. Flew home on Dec. 31st. A few
days after that because aware of noises in
my ears, hearing my heartbeat constantly
and loss of hearing. Went to Dr., put me
on Anti biotic and RX for cough tablets.
Nothing worked. Next week he put me on a
course of steroids. Did nothing. Tried
Allegra for a few days. Did nothing.
Also have been taking cough meds and
decongestants over the counter. Going to
ENT doctor Monday. I am at my wits end.
I am afraid the ENT may not help either.

My ears have gotten quite a bit better,
probably just time has helped. They
still itch and occasionally still hear the
heartbeat when using my pillow at bedtime.
. The throat problem and major coughing
have also gotten somewhat better. My ENT
doc said he thinks it is GERD and should
take the Prilosec for a month. He said I
have been treated for post nasal drip with
all the meds I was taking it should have
taken it away. Sometimes it takes that
long for coughs to stop. My voice gets
weak by the end of the day, but all in all
I think I have improved. I'm going on a
17 hour flight overseas next week and hope
my ears are OK. I am taking, gum for
chewing, decongestant, drinking water
slowly. That is supposed to help the
ears. Getting old just sucks. Things
take long to go away.

I was surprised to see I am not the only
one going nuts with clogged ears. This is
the 1st time it has happened to me and
frankly it sucks. Had bronchitis in
January and since then have been trying to
get rid of stuffy nose and cough. My one
ear popped last week and the other
yesterday. It is very annoying not to be
able to hear properly!. My Dr prescribed
anti-histamine and nasal spray. I would
love to hear if anyone's ears have cleared
up completely and share the cure please!!

I've had a deviated septum since I was 16.
I've suffer from allergies-seasonal,
mildew, mold and dust. I have polyps. I
blew a polyp out and suddenly lost the ear
clogged feeling. But now it's back, polyps
grow back.
I hear that using a neti pot works well
and warm compresses on the ear.
Let me know if anyone has other
suggestions.

Hi! I can't believe I have been going
through the same thing for a while now. I
have one ear that is very clogged!!
Reading the replies from everyone made me
feel I am not alone!.. I also have had
boughts with dizziness and sinus problems.
It seems I am constantly on antibiotics
and nasal decongestants. All tests given
by the ent seem to come back normal. So
I always ask myself then why am I feeling
this way. I've even gone to an allergist
whom found nothing wrong but reccommended
a saline rinse. Which helps but does not
cure!
Keep me posted, if anything new helps
anyone.
