My Baby Doesnt Have a Gallbladder...
Posted: 12-13-03 23:51pm

My name is marissa. If you have read any of my other posts, than you are probably aware that I have a disabled 9 month old son. After having an ultrasoung performed on his liver, kidneys, abdomen and scrotum, it was discovered that he had been born without a gallbladder. So far the doctors are not worried. Nothing has been decided. He is on a special formula. Does anyone have any input on this situation? Have any of you ever heard of a baby without a gallbladder? If so, what was the outcome?

Thankyou,
desperately seeking answers.

as long as your son's common bile duct (the duct that carries bile from the liver to the small intestines) is open, he should do fine.

Born Without a Gallbladder

Hello:

i am a 35 yr old man born without a gallbladder. In 2003 I found out that I was born without a gallbladder. All my childhood I had been experiencing pain, nauseaness, sick to the point that I couldn't eat! I remember when I was younger, a child, I went to the Dr. Because my stomach was hurting really bad, so bad that I had to ball up in a knot to try and relieve the pain, but in actuality nothing worked. The Dr. Results were that I had a case of (ulcers!!). But I wasn'nt buying it. As the years grew my sickness started increasing more and more as time passed me by. Back in 2002, I experienced severe pains in my stomach, so severe that I had to be driven to the e.R., they recommended me to see my local doctor and he recommended me to a gasterologist. I went back and foward to that gasteronologist for a period of 7-8 months. My gasteronologist did every test possible on me and they all came back negative of any sickness. So he recommended me to a gallbladder specialist and that specialist final result were that I had a gallbladder disease. I agreed that I was going to get it(gallbladder) removed, but when I had the laprioscopic surgery, I found out that I didn't have a gallbladder and I was 1 out a million that was born without one. I was very confused and disturbed after I found out that I didnt have a gallbladder. After that, I started to get sicker and sicker so I went to another doctor in another city and they ran tests and all on me to find out my problem. They too said that I was 1 out-of-500,000 to be born without a gallbladder. After all that, their results were that I had acid reflux disease. I've tried every pill on the market, and I am getting very disstressed with doctors. I am now taking prevacid and I have been taking them for about 5-6 months. In actuality, nothing really changed. Out of 30 days in a month, I am sick at least 25 of those days. I am tired of being sick and I wish that some doctor would read this forum and help me please! I am in desperate need of this unusual case of medical attention. I have 3 kids that I want to live to see when they get grown. There are many strange symptoms I expeirenced: sickness of the stomach, vomiting, gagging, can't eat, soft stool, belching, headaches, stiff neck, aches, pain, and many more. Every test I taken and every doctor i've seen have told me that I am a healthy young man, but the more I try to explain, it seems as if they doubt me of my health. I know that I am not mentally insane or am I over -reacting. My family thinks that this is all in my mind, but it's real. I am really fighting for my life. Image being sick and not able to eat when you are hungry?

Lonnie

one way to look at the statement, "it's all in your head" is that the symptoms you're feeling are quite real, but perhaps your reaction or response both physically and emotionally is making the situation worse.
Undiagnosed depression is a possibility. Being sick is bad enough. Stress from other aspects of your life can make it worse.
When you don't have a gallbladder (whether you were born without one or had it removed) bile just continuously flows thru the common bile duct in to the small intestines whether there is food to digest or not. Perhaps this bile is refluxing (backing up) into the stomach.
Could your diet be aggravating your stomach? Certain medications can irratate your stomach.

My mom too just found out last year 2004 that she was born without a gallbladder. Most of her life she has suffered a lot of pain and fever but doctors were unable to properly diagnose the problem until last year. She underwent surgery to remove some stones that had formed and after that felt little or no pain for several months. Recently though she started having pain again along with high fever so she'll have to go see the doctor again to see what's going on.

I dont really see why a person needs a gall bladder...As many people get them removed...Cuz they can cause a person to get sick, my friend just had hers removed...As she got severely sick from it.

I Guess I Don't Have a Gallbladder
Posted: 10-28-05 08:45am

Good day to all
in april 2005 I got severe pains on my right side. I went to my physcian and he examined me and stated that he thought it was my gallbladder. He sent me for a ultrasound, which came back inconclusive according to the surgeon. The surgeon ordered another ultrasound. Got the call that it was definetly my gallbladder and schedule me for surgery. Had operation in oct. Guess what I did not have a gallbladder for them to remove, but they did fix a hernia. Jokes on me. I still have pain on my right side but I guess it is to early to tell.

I too was born w/o a gallbladder. I was admitted into the hospital with what they diagnosed as a gallbladder attack, during the surgery, they discovered there was nothing to remove. That particular surgeon almost killed me because he did not see that the pressures of my bile duct were so severe, it was leaking bile into my liver. Luckliy, I went to a gastroenterologist that was able to diagnose me correctly, performed an ercp and put a stent in my ducts to open them up. 3 months later had to have another ercp to remove the stent. Since then, I have had no problems with my stomach. This all occured in 1995.

Gallbladder

If we didn't need a gallbladder, I would think the god who designed us, would have left it out of the original parents. My understanding, is that the gallbladder is a storage tank for bile, from the liver, to aid in the digestion of fats. Its like dawn dish soap, it breaks down fats so they can be easily absorbed through the gi tract and utilized as food. Once the bile has done this in the small intestine, it is reabsorbed in the large intestine, and shipped back to the liver for resuse. The problem comes in with many bad oils used in modern day cooking, poor eating habits, drugs that affect the liver, thus causing poor bile production and a sludging up of the gallbladder, and the list goes on. If you hae been born with out a gallbladder, then you want to eat a diet low in fats, and limit your alcohol, caffine, and tylenol intake, or anythiny that stresses the liver or would over load the gallbladder if you had one. When were young our bodies can make adjustments for us, but when we get a little older, if begins to show signs of not being able to withstand our poor judgements in food intake, whether it be the type of food or beverage or the amounts of a food or beverage that is toxic to different systems of the body. Go to your local healthfood store, or research the internet, as to foods that aggravate the gallbladder, and tax the livers ability to do its job. I'm not saying you should try and medicate yourself, with a doctors supervision, but you can fine a lot of information about the proper diet for a digestive system with a poor ability to metabolize fats.

Born with no gallbladder

I found out in January that I don't have a gallbladder. Or at least they haven't found it yet. Unfortunately, it was during surgery to remove my gallbladder that it was found I don't have one. I ended up in a St. Louis hospital with a specialist performing ERCP. After all was said & done, I spent several days in hospital, had three surgeries, and they still have not located my gallbladder. I am 40 yr old female. I guess it is possible to live entire life without one.

Hi, I wanted to suggest that you try reading the book Ultra-metabolism. I have no gallbladder and remember the stomach aches were really bad when I was little. Since reaching adulthood, I began eating well and working out quite a bit. I have no problems now and suggest a really good diet and a really aggressive workout regime. Good luck.
