Insomnia As An Imprinted Behavior Posted: 11-26-05 00:22am
Hello. I have had insomnia since I was a
child. Always having a difficult time
going to sleep at night and staying
asleep. Throuhout my life there have
been periods where I was adjusted to being
awake during the day and sleep at night,
but always went to sleep very late.
However, I would lapse back to a reversal
of sleeping patterns. Awake at night and
sleepy during the day.
Recently, I had an interesting
conversation with my mother about my
sleeping patterns. She informed me that
while she worked during the day, my father
worked nights and so I was asleep during
the day until my mother got home and my
father went off to work. My mother took
care of me at night while she got what
ever sleep inbetween.
This went on during the first two years of
my life when my mother and father were
together. I learned in psychology class
that these first two years of a person's
life are the 'imprinting' years.
Whatever behavior instilled and exposed to
a child during these years are the
foundations to behavior that will last
throughout that child's life.
Is there anything I can do to adjust?
I'm trying very hard to get back to a
regular day/night cycle and it's wearing
me out. I don't take well to medications
either so it makes it harder to find a
method that will work.
If anyone here has any suggestions, tips,
or advice, please send them my way. It'd
be much appreciated.
Thank you
