Paul kraus, who is probably the world’s longest living survivor of malignant mesothelioma has written a book about how he healed his cancer using an holistic approach and invites other cancer patients to speak with him.

in june 1997, paul kraus was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a deadly cancer that has an average survival of less than 12 months. In his case, the prognosis was not even that optimistic. He was told that he had only “a few months to live” and was offered palliative treatments of surgery and chemotherapy. Palliative means that the treatment would not cure him but might help reduce his symptoms. After the extensive side effects were explained, mr. Kraus decided to reject these therapies.

Instead, he immersed himself in learning about alternative treatment approaches to cancer. This is a hot subject in which many orthodox oncologists believe there is little value. Nonetheless with over $40 billion spent on orthodox cancer therapies by the national cancer institute in the last ten years and no real progress made in extending the survival of patients with metastatic solid cancers, it is a subject that has seen increased interest by patients and politicians. According to a recent survey in the journal of clinical oncology three-quarters of cancers patients use some type of complimentary or alternative treatment. And the federal government has spent over $300 million researching complimentary and alternative therapies through its cam programs in the last five years.

For paul kraus his own personal research paid off. He took an alternative approach to healing his cancer. Now, more than eight years later, he is alive with a good quality of life having rejected repeated offers of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.

As news of his achievement spread through an ever widening network of “terminal” cancer patients, he decided to share his approach with others by putting it down on paper. The book, surviving mesothelioma and other cancers: a patient’s guide details the author’s approach to healing cancer. In the book’s introduction, he wrote, “my survival has been hard work. The underlying assumption with all that I have done, and continue to do, is a strong belief that our bodies are designed with amazing self-healing capacities.”

mr. Kraus’ book has impressed some orthodox trained physicians. Bernie siegel, m.D (medical doctorate from cornell medical college and surgical training at yale university) reviewed the book and commented, “paul kraus’ book has all the information a cancer patient needs to have in order to learn what survival behavior is about. He has lived the experience, is a native in cancer land and can guide you through the territory.”
