Bi-polar Genetic?
Posted: 12-01-05 23:01pm

So i've been taking paxil for anxiety/panic attacks/depression for the past 5 years and am terrified that i'm gonna end up like my bi-polar aunt. She's on lithium and a total zombie. We think she might even be borderline schizophrenic. When she's off her meds she's delusional, talks to herself and is totally in another world. My mom says my aunt was ok until she had kids and that's when all the bi-polar signs started to show. I have panic attacks around her because I really get scared that's how i'm gonna end up. Neither of my parents have been diagnosed with any mental disorders so should I even worry??? This is always in the back of my mind. Anyone have any input?

Bipolar is a genetic disorder or disease. With ur aurnts case she probably had the disease ur whole life its just a matter of when it started affecting ur. Its hard to explain. But and example would be cancer. Everyone, I mean everyone has cancer cells and its just a matter of it being active and when if u do. So for bipolar in ur aunt it may have been in her but just didnt showanything yet. I dotn think u should worry. Another thing when ur aunt had kids that triggers many different hormones and does many things that plays around with ur system and could have been part of the reason it was triggered. Anyway I dont think u should be worried. All people are different and also just because its genetic doesnt mean that u will get it. Some people get bipolar realy bad and some not as bad. There is a type one and a type two each one pretty different. Now for ur aunt I dont kno what all she does but it sounds to me she is not a too bad of a case. Because the bad bipolar cases ususally happen in the beggining of life. So ur chances are very small. Because it would be through ur grandma then through ur mom then to u, that pretty unlikely plus ur grandma may have had only like a couple percent and ur aunt was just unlucky and the gene combo may have landed correctly. But dont worry I think u will be fine. Just go about life and live it to the fullest.
