Allright, my signifacnt other had onset
juvenile diabetes, type 1. His
grandfather has diabetes and has lost both
of his legs due to it. He is 20 years
old and for the past 4 years,he has not
been testing like he should, and managing
his diabetes like he should. Is there
any way I can help him or say to him to
motivate him to take better cae of
himself?

That Is a Tough Task - I Was There Posted: 03-04-06 23:51pm
Sorry about your dilema.
After 6 years of my parents monitoring my
every move
and every morsale I ate / drank ,
including a locked
refrigerator and food closet - I too ate
everything in
sight when I finally got out on my own.
.
And I also had a grandmother that got
gangerine
and had both legs amputated.
.
Fyi - I didn't test that much those days,
thinking
i was ok - but when I started testing - I
found
all my sugars to be 300-400. You get
used to
being high-sugar , but its very bad for
you.
.Getting a 125 feels like you are in a
reaction.
.
If son never was (regulated) pretty good,
under
a (good) internal med doctor or
endrochronologist,
he probably doesnt' know how good it feels
being
regulated (normal). So doesn't care.
.
I woke up when I married a rn at 21.
She gracefully motivated me to get sugars
back
to normal, and I did .
If I went off my diet - I tested and then
took
enough insulin to balance the sweets I
just ate.
Usually a doctor recommends 1 unit
humalog = 10 carb.
But check again in 90 min to be sure that
works.
.
Many of us know what to do - but reject
the
idea of giving up hi-carb food the rest of
our life!
Especially if someone close is constantly
bugging us.
After many years of being stupid and
daring fate,
i finally took matters seriously, and now
doing ok.
I've now had diabetes 47 yrs. But I must
say
god has protected me thru all this.

Just try telling him how worried you are
and how you would feel if something bad
happend to him. But I do the same thing
its really hard, so try putting your self
in his shoes.

I know this sounds bad but find a hospital
or nursing home. Then find a diabetic in
one of those who has not taken care of
themselves and show him the consequences
of not taking care of them try scaring him
into take care of them.
